Don’t Just Be a Victim! Sales Guru Anthony Iannarino Explains “How to Beat a Rigged System” Unpacking and Exploring Success Principles, Takeaways and Tactics; plus, MHVille Markets Update

Don’tJustBeAVictim!SalesGuruAnthonyIannarinoExplainsHowToBeatARiggedSystemUnpackingAndExploringSuccessPrinciplesTakeawaysAndTacticsPlusMHVilleMarketsUpdateMHProNews

Anthony Iannarino said in a post on the TheSalesBlog.com that “Too many people are being convinced to accept the mindset of the victim. They’re being told they don’t have the power change their life. They are buying the idea that the system is rigged against them and that there’s nothing they can do about it.” When sales recruiters and human relations professionals in manufactured housing, or some other industries, are looking for new talent they often look for individuals who have been successful in some other kind of selling. That noted, “ANTHONY IANNARINO spent twenty years selling and leading a sales force in the highly-commoditized industry of staffing before becoming a writer and publishing daily at thesalesblog.com,” stated Google Books. Iannarino may seem to deny that the system is rigged, but then said that even if it were true: “holding these beliefs would not serve the holder, creating resentment, anger, frustration, and a debilitatingly negative mindset instead.” Then, Iannarino lays out his plan on How to Beat a Rigged System.

Per the staffing sales pro turned coach, author, and speaker is the following.

QuoteMarksLeftSideIf the system is rigged, there’s still an age-old recipe for beating that system and succeeding in the pursuit of your goals.

  • Attitude: Your attitude is 100% within your control, which is not to pretend it’s easy. A good attitude is a discipline. You will always have a negative stimulus. However, you also have the power to pause between that stimulus and your response. If you want to understand how important the decision is to control your attitude, read Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl survived three concentration camps in Nazi Germany while losing his family. He attributes his survival to the ability to control his mind—his most important freedom. Your attitude is what gives you power inside a rigged system.
  • Work Ethic: Your work ethic is also within your control. You can show up early, stay later, and work harder than anyone else. You can also do better work than almost anyone else by merely giving that work your full focus and concentration. In an age of infinite distractions, a strong ability to focus is a defining differentiator. It is difficult not to like and appreciate people with an exceptional work ethic. Work ethic by itself will provide advancement opportunities. The system has no way to protect itself from a hard worker. Wherever they go, hard workers are highly valued and reap the benefits and rewards of their efforts.
  • Level Up: if you look for one common denominator among all successful people, regardless of their human endeavor or pursuit, and regardless of the circumstances of their birth, you will find that they continually work on improving themselves. They read books, and they take courses, they study other people to gain an edge that allows them to produce better results. Leveling upisn’t a matter of money. There’s enough content on the Internet in whatever area you want to improve at no cost-or an extraordinarily low cost—that self-improvement has never been more available to you. The system was long ago broken here. There are no more gatekeepers. No one can stop you from becoming super-competent.
  • Accountability: If you want to grow and advance, you have to be accountable for greater and greater outcomes. Jocko Willinkproposes extreme ownership. The first thing you need to be responsible for is your performance. When you look to externalities for reasons that you are not succeeding, I promise you will find them. When you understand that your state is the result of your beliefs, the decisions you’ve made and the actions you’ve taken—or more likely, not taken—you recognize that you control the one thing you need to manage to produce the results you want. The system is rigged for those who are accountable, taking responsibility for delivering outcomes. It rewards that behavior in every case.
  • Find a Model: Other people are right now producing the results that you want in your life. They are no different than you are. You are human; they are human. You have natural talents and gifts as well as deficiencies, and so do they. But the recipe for producing almost any result you want in life is well known and well documented. There are specific sets of action when repeated that generate a particular outcome. If you’re going to speed up the time it takes you to create a result, find a model, deconstruct the recipe, and follow that recipe. This result is already being produced within the system, and because you are in that same system, all things being equal, it will produce the same result for you.”

The evidence-based case can be made that every one of those points Iannarino made has a basis of truth. An evidence-based argument can also be forged that the above is applicable to manufactured housing, along with several other professions.

But there are also reasons why Iannarino wrote this post in the first place.

A Rigged System?

Many people believe with good reason that the system in America is rigged. Some evidence follows.

Even before the declared COVID 19 pandemic, Pew Research revealed in January 2020 that: “70 percent of Americans” believe that the system is rigged. Pew said that those people say the system is rigged believe in “The notion that the U.S. economy is “rigged” to benefit the wealthy.”

BigThink in a reprint from Harvard Business Review said on June 7, 2023 that: “Workers are quitting their jobs at a record rate, and America has lost its healthy middle class.”

  • Young people are skeptical of capitalism and are becoming convinced that the only way to create a strong middle class is to unionize.
  • CEOs and other corporate leaders need to reestablish trust in the marketplace, not just with low-wage workers but with customers.
  • “We need “good jobs” to restore trust and save capitalism” wrote Zeynep Ton for the Harvard Business Review, who stated that: “from fulfillment centers to factories, companies are having such trouble finding workers that some are adding signing bonuses as high as $3,000.”
  • “America has lost its healthy middle class. Even before the pandemic, 53 million people—44 percent of the workforce—worked in jobs for which the median annual pay was just $17,950.”

Without referring to Robin Harding’s How Warren Buffett Broke American Capitalism and its clearly stated concerns about the negative effect of “the moat” on free enterprise “capitalism,” Ton’s article for the Harvard Business Review was making similar points.

QuoteMarksLeftSideEven before the pandemic, 70 percent of Americans believed the economic system was rigged against them; 47 percent believed that capitalism does more harm than good. Life expectancy in the United States has been declining since 2014. A major reason for the decline, according to economists Anne Case and Angus Deaton, is “deaths of despair”; that is, deaths from drug overdose, alcohol-related liver disease, and suicide. Even among those who have succeeded most in this system, there are corporate leaders who believe that capitalism is broken.”

In 2016 CBS News released a poll that said that 71 percent of the population believes that the system is rigged.

Ton said: “From 2020 to 2021, the ratio of CEO pay to median worker pay for three hundred low-wage employers—many of those whose employees were considered essential workers or heroes during the pandemic—rose from 604-to-1 to 670-to-1.”

There is not only widespread belief that the system is rigged, but evidence to support the notion, at least from the vantage point of those who feel that they are increasingly being locked out of the American Dream.

  • That means that Democrats, Republicans, and independents routinely believe that the system is rigged.
  • There are wealthy people who say the system is rigged.
  • There are poor people say that the system is rigged.
  • There are millions in the middle class think that the system is rigged.

If you are in the business of selling more of whatever, and in our industry’s case – more manufactured home, more leased sites, or more services to those in the manufactured housing business – it is useful to grasp how the system is rigged, and probe how you can adapt to make it work for you.

Back to Anthony Iannarino

After seemingly denying that they system is rigged, Iannarino closed his post by saying (bold and italics added): “The economic world in which we find ourselves is not an easy one to navigate. There are systemic challenges, in some ways greater than earlier times. That said, a scrappy go-getter always bends the system to their will.”

Bluntly, Iannarino appears to be on both sides of the ‘rigged system’ question. Quoting him earlier: “They are buying the idea that the system is rigged against them and that there’s nothing they can do about it. Set aside for the time being that none of these things are true.”

Upon a closer look, Iannarino hasn’t exactly denied that the system is rigged. What he is saying is that it is a mistake to say that there isnothing you can do about it.” There are things to be done, so in that respect, Iannarino is onto something.

In manufactured housing, there are sales and marketing systems that have been successfully deployed in the past MHProNews is aware of and has in our sister-consulting side deployed that are in little or no evidence today. In one specific case, an independent retailer that was successfully using a recruiting, marketing, and sales system praised by an independent producer that was a Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) member reportedly was bought out by Clayton Homes, and then that previously proven systems were discontinued. Why is that so?

Perhaps in part because the “moat” thinking at Clayton but also beyond has seemingly become quite pervasive. What people that learned at Clayton have gone on to other firms, with a possible case in point that Joseph “Joe” Stegmayer was a Clayton Homes as a division president and went onto lead Cavco Industries. Fear and/or caution about those who have a bigger moat than their own has become engrained. See yesterday’s in-depth report to get specific examples of how moat and consolidation mentalities have demonstrably cost firms money in the form of greater possible profits and opportunities.

Lessons Learned – So You Can Earn More

Let’s note that this author has bookshelves with volumes of books that preach ideas such as those that Iannarino advanced. Moreover, a friend of the site is Tim Connor, CSP, who has been a successful seller himself, and has made a career out of teaching others to get more out of their personal or team’s performance. MHProNews recently spotlighted an immigrant success story and the life-lessons he shared. The point is that this platform agrees with the notion that “We the People” should not roll over, ‘play dead,’ and accept the thankless role of being a helpless victim.

A person or organization can be victimized and can then learn to fight back.

The notion that we have collectively been ripped off doesn’t mean that we have to curl up in a semi-round ball, drink, smoke, do drugs, or otherwise escape reality in order to dull the frustration and pain of a rigged system.

There are reasons why MHProNews has been doing more reports recently from the vantagepoint of those ‘in the trenches.’ As billionaire Nick Hanauer warned, a highly unequal society with unhappy workers has stresses and thus risks for the wealthy that will either lead to a “pitchforks” style uprising or a police state.

Positive change can come from a variety of sources. It can start among corporate and other leaders, or it can begin among the rank and file. Some who have made it, can become leaders for positive change in MHVille. Some who haven’t made it, but believe in the notion of authentic opportunities, can also become leaders in making positive changes a reality.

Are Manufactured Home Sales a Young Person’s Game? What Research Reveals About Housing Sales Careers – Including Clayton Homes, MHI, More Insights; plus MHVille Markets Update

Few are as positive about the potential of manufactured housing as this writer. Who says? An MHI award winner, Dick Ernst (starting about the 3-minute mark), among others.

Happy clients responded to similar ‘positive thinking’ ‘goal orientation’ ‘worker harder and smarter’ types of thinking along with specific methods that resulted in more business.

That said, it was frustrating that MHI, which claimed to be working to lift all boats by serving “all segments” of the manufactured housing industry was not in fact doing the commonsense steps that one should expect. This detailed look at an MHI leader sheds light on that topic. So too does the comparison between Gail Cardwell and Lesli Gooch.

But why hasn’t – and aren’t – manufactured housing industry leaders doing what ought to be common sense? Because the system is rigged.  Why is it rigged? Because several industry corporate and other leaders have apparently bought into the notion that if they consolidate a chunk of the manufactured housing industry for themselves, said they believe they can do so with minimal risk and good rewards. Frank Rolfe, who has spoken at MHI sponsored events, his own, and others in the MHI or other orbits, put it bluntly.

However, what is not likely taught at “Frank and Dave’s” “Mobile Home University” “boot camps” is that this moat mentality, this move toward monopolization that is seen by numbers of residents and some attorneys as predatory, also yields unhappy employees and team members.  Again, using “Frank and Dave” led Impact Communities as an example, is the following evidence for that statement.  The satisfaction of people who have or do work at Impact is “below average,” per Indeed’s ratings by those who do the work.

That said, pain and problems routinely represent opportunities in disguise.

Tim Connor and the late Zig Ziglar aren’t cookie cutters of each other. They each had unique traits and insights. Ziglar has said that problem solving is critical. Connor’s has warned against the Corporate Disconnect in one of his top selling books. What MHProNews has been hammering away at evidence of the problems, because the path to far more manufactured home sales obviously requires navigating those roadblocks.

Tips for Positive Change

Some tips.

  • Get with pragmatic, goal- and solution-oriented people.
  • Review the list by Iannarino above. It’s useful. Attitude. Work Ethic. Level Up. Accountability. Find a model.
  • Plug into positive thinkers like Connor or Ziglar while noting that pragmatism must be an element that is embraced.
  • Once you’ve embraced a more positive, can do, success-oriented mindset couple it with a never quit mentality. A historic ‘life and death’ example is useful. During the “Battle of Britian” in World War II, Germans bombing England did not cause the British to cave in and surrender. They rallied around Winston Churchill and his never quit, never give up, never surrender mentality. That is the kind of “model” that Iannarino’s tip can lead you to embrace. But note that Churchill didn’t just think, we aren’t going to quit. They forged their allies, devised and worked a plan that ultimately led to victory.

  • Think like Zig. The first step in problem solving is to recognize that it (the problem) does exist. Take action to solve the problem as quickly as possible.
  • Don’t buy into the propaganda. Note that Churchill, per the quote above, pointed out the connection between war and untruth (i.e.: enemy propaganda). Once you realize (or embrace) that the system is rigged, one must recognize that subtle to blatant gaslighting It may seem appealing to be ‘part of a crowd,’ but that system-rigging crowd is the minority. They are a potent minority. They are not to be underestimated.  That’s why Buffett was willing to acknowledge several times that his class has ‘won.’

  • Keep learning, but don’t just learn for learning’s sake. Learn with the idea of establishing and/or refining plans for your personal, organizational, and/or group success.
  • As successful Steve Hollosi recently said to MHProNews, find balance in living life.

MHLivingNews said several times (so has MHProNews) that a new kind of feudalism has been rising in the U.S. and numbers of other ‘western’ nations. Forms of feudalism and oppression were what early American colonists were often leaving. This is a different way of describing what Buffett proclaimed in his quotes above and below.

  • Learn authentic history. America’s history has never been perfect, but American history is inspirational in many ways.  We as a nation have had tough times several times. We’ve faced rigged systems  and corruption before. Time and again, “We the People” embraced leadership that pushed back and rebalanced. History is practical and instructive, which is why Buffett and other successful people have often studied history and continue to study history and current events.
  • Prayer. Embrace honest, timeless, foundational values. It may not seem cool to talk about the Ten Commandments, but God is all wise. He didn’t give us bad advice.
  • Ancient and timeless wisdom is “Ora et Labora.” Prayer and good works. Pray like it all depends on God, work like it all depends on you. That combination is powerful.
  • Jujitsu. Consider what the tactics of your opponents are and learn how to turn their tactics against them.

That last point is among the reasons we mention the legal system. On a personal/professional note, it has been well over a decade since this writer personally used the legal system to sue (and win). So, that should make clear that this writer isn’t lawsuit crazy. But at various times, when someone did wrong in business, instead of just taking it (being the victim), the facts were gathered, the case was organized, a contingency attorney was identified and employed, and lawsuits were filed that routinely succeeded. Attorneys have said that I “make a good witness,” perhaps because I’m mentally prepared, have a good level of expertise, and have experienced being a witness in court.

Another reason details are used in our reports is because the details matter in legal issues. Knowing those details can help you and/or your friends/colleagues, if an issue ends up going legal. Sometimes, just having the facts can cause your opponent to think twice and work things out without legal action being required.

As a scan of past or recent reports reveals, there are numerous possible targets of litigation by plaintiffs’ attorneys and/or public officials in MHVille. Some suits are already underway or have previously been successful.

The list of strategies and tips could go on but keep this one in mind. Whenever possible, don’t feed the hand that bites yours. It sounds like common sense, right? But the Bud Light, Target, Disney controversies and resultant boycotts are examples of how purchasing power works. Some have called that the 2nd Vote. “Vote your values” with your wallet. This writer like Dairy Queen’s Dilly Bar. But I don’t like their corporate, or parent conglomerate’s values. So, we buy a different product that is similar that doesn’t have those same ties.

One key point is that we are not powerless.

“Too many people are being convinced to accept the mindset of the victim,” said Iannarino. We don’t have to accept that victim mindset. We can recognize what has gone wrong, and use our time, talents, and treasure in ways that help us correct what has gone wrong. Quitting or head-in-the-sand thinking doesn’t work. Only a never-quit, do your best under whatever circumstances mindset can succeed. It has worked numerous times in the past. It can work again. ##

During the Iron Curtain era of Eastern Europe, there were several movements of often peaceful “saboteurs” that successfully caused the communist era in several countries to end.

Saboteurs Lyrics
In the morning glow I’ll hold you closeWhile lunatics clutch the nuclear codesAnd take their tolls on burning roadsAs we huddle here over the radio
We’ll meet there soon in the vestibuleIn the ivory tower with our rusted toolsAnd right these wrongs with our crippled throngIt’s not too late to play a weak hand strong
Hey, if you want itBaby let’s be saboteursTake ’em down from the insideBaby let’s be saboteursI’m not gonna change my mind
In the poison glow of the undertowWe’ll kick against the tideBaby let’s be saboteursBaby let’s be saboteurs
I’m not gonna change my mind and toe the lineAnd be the victim of another “victimless” crimeWe’ll make this pact, one we can’t take backOur master stroke will be their heart attack
Hey, if you want itBaby let’s be saboteursTake ’em down from the insideBaby let’s be saboteurs
I’m not gonna change my mindIn the poison glow of the undertowWe’ll kick against the tideBaby let’s be saboteursBaby let’s be saboteurs
