Rising energy, fuel, housing, and other costs. Unrest and organized protests, like the Truckers Peoples Convoy are spreading. To set the context for the reports on energy, oil, truckers and more headline topics, some facts and context are useful. Washington D.C. is about a four to six hour drive from New York City, says Lisbdnet. That NYC to DC drive is about 227 miles via I-95, per Google Maps. The shortest air distance from Texas to DC is 1,371 miles, said Lisbnet. Google Maps says that the drive from Austin to the U.S. Capitol is 22 hours and 2 minutes on average. Lisbdnet said “The direct drive from Washington DC to Los Angeles is 2657 mi (4275 km), and should have a drive time of 1 day 14 hrs in normal traffic.” For most Americans, it is safe to say that a trip to DC is more than an eight-hour drive. Today, as the report provided to MHProNews further below reflects, several self-named “Freedom Convoys” made up of truckers and other drivers will arrive in the Washington DC Metro area. Everyday Americans have made the journey of hours or days of travel to stage a protest against how the nation is being run. National Guardsmen are in the city to deter or quell concerns by some public officials over violence. In advance of White House Resident* Joe Biden’s SOTU – State of the Union – speech to Congress, the fencing that went up around the Capitol Building for his inauguration last year was re-erected. It seems that various members of Congress and some public officials see the value of fencing around the White House and for lawmakers as protection and crowd control. Meanwhile, many of those same characters deny the value of fencing at the U.S-Mexican border, where officials claim over 2 million people illegally entered the U.S. in 2021.

Can you spell disconnect and hypocrisy?

While opinion polls done objectively can produce some valuable insights, so too can viewership facts.

The Biden SOTU address reportedly yielded the lowest viewership in 30 years said the Daily Mail. That’s despite population growth and the claim that he earned more votes than anyone in presidential campaign history. The New York Post noted that was down significantly from both Presidents Barack H. Obama’s and Donald J. Trump’s first SOTU telecast.

 

Per the New York Post;

“More than 38 million Americans tuned in to President Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, the lowest viewing figures for a commander-in-chief’s first SOTU in at least 30 years.

According to Nielsen Media Research, approximately 27.4 million households watched Biden’s hour-long address live on 16 different networks for a 22.4 rating.

By contrast, Donald Trump’s first official State of the Union speech in 2018 garnered a 26.9 rating, with an estimated 45.5 million viewers tuning in.

In 2010, more than 48 million Americans watched Barack Obama’s first State of the Union (29.8 rating) and more than 51.8 million tuned in to hear George W. Bush in 2002 (33.6 rating). In 1994, an estimated 45.8 million Americans watched Bill Clinton deliver his first State of the Union.”

Most Americans think the nation is on the wrong track under Biden’s ‘leadership,’ according to a range of polling sources that span the left-right divide. Even many Democrats don’t want Brandon, err, Biden to run again.

Two Democrats on the left wing of his party gave countering SOTU remarks, a possible sign that the moderates and coalition builders in the Democratic Party may be fracturing. Per Yahoo, which called this counter messaging by Democrats against a Democrat in the White House, are the following bullets.

  • Three House Democrats are giving responses to Biden’s State of the Union, an unusual move.
  • Rashida Tlaib and Colin Allred will speak on behalf of progressives and the CBC, respectively.
  • Josh Gottheimer, a centrist, will speak on a panel hosted by No Labels.

Meanwhile, Gov Kim Reynolds (IA-R) gave the Republican response to Biden’s SOTU. Fact checkers found one flaw in her statements, but several in Biden’s.

What is not much in evidence in recent weeks are Black Lives Matter or AntiFa style protests. Why not? Are the powers that be that find those groups satisfied with the status quo? Apparently so.

Calling for Joe Biden to end COVID mandates, national ’emergency’

The People’s Convoy, a miles-long string of trucks and other vehicles that left California last week and is expecting to arrive in Washington, D.C., Saturday – meeting up with other truckers from other parts of the country – wants Joe Biden to end those COVID mandates and his self-proclaimed national “emergency.”

Truckers were traveling on Thursday through Ohio and their convoy was described as more than eight miles long.

Kris Young, who runs a Facebook page about the campaign, said, “The rally in Monrovia was a huge success! The layover allowed for others from across the country to join us! We are bigger now than when we arrived.”

The estimate for attendance at the rally in Indiana, called the Shifting Gears Rally, was estimated in the thousands.

Brian Brase, an organizer of the events, said, “It’s time for truckers around the world to stand up for your rights now!”

The activism has been modeled after the Freedom Convoy in Canada that started on its West Coast and traveled to Ottawa, where truckers closed down streets in civil disobedience that prompted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to declare martial law and use violence against the peaceful protesters who were arrested by the hundreds.

The government also confiscated trucks when it chose.

The Daily Mail reported on the American movement: “The People’s Convoy – which has raised more than $1.5million in donations made through its own website – embarked from California last week on an 11-day trek to Washington D.C. The group plans to hold a peaceful protest near the capital city on Saturday and has sworn not to disrupt roads or bridges like their Canadian counterparts did. Organizers have promised a ‘100% safe, lawful and peaceful journey’ that will ‘terminate in the vicinity of the D.C. area, but will NOT be going into D.C. proper.'”

The report said at least 25 other convoys reportedly were en route to Washington from other parts of the nation. Some of those have been small, some larger, and it remains unclear how many will congregate on Saturday.

The size has been fluid because of the distance of the convoy’s trip, and the expense of the travel, with fuel approaching $4 a gallon because of several factors, including Biden’s insistence on shutting down fossil fuels industry components and pursuing wind power.

One of the other groups was called the Southeast American Freedom Convoy.

Federal officials in Washington had put law enforcement on high alert, and have arranged for the presence of hundreds of National Guard troops to confront the peaceful truckers.

And officials have rebuilt a security fence around the U.S. Capitol.

The convoy, no matter its ultimate number of participants, already has seen significant success as many states and even federal officials have been dropping COVID mandates right and left in recent days.

While the truckers’ message undoubtedly was heard, it’s also fact that Democrats who had imposed those restrictions on Americans’ constitutional rights now are gearing up for re-election campaigns for the 2022 midterms.

Also, COVID infections have been plunging, with only 52,000 reported on day this week, down more than 90% from the 800,000 case per day in January.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just last week released new coronavirus guidelines that mean mask recommendations now are gone for 70% of Americans.

In Canada, reports from the Associated Press reveal citizens have lost faith in their government following its crackdown on rights, and Trudeau’s image has been hurt by the handling of the protests.

“Approval among Canadians about the Trudeau-led Liberal Party is near a 12-month low as of last week, according to polling from Ottawa-based Nanos Research. A separate Nanos poll, gathered after Mr. Trudeau cleared a nearly monthlong trucker-led demonstration that had choked the capital, indicates almost half of Canadians say their impressions of the prime minister had worsened during the protest, which called for the end of Covid-19 restrictions,” that report said.

“The prime minister has recently drawn criticism from many Canadians, and even members of his own Liberal caucus, for what they say were polarizing and dismissive comments toward those who disagree with his tough public-health measures during the Covid-19 pandemic,” it said.

John Wright of Maru Public Opinion said Trudeau now faces a divided nation, with evidence in surveys of a “sharp anger” he hasn’t seen in many years.

Trudeau had derogatorily labeled the thousands of truckers involved in the protest there a “fringe” group. And he said their views on freedom were “unacceptable.” In the U.S., those who have opposed COVID mandates have been labeled domestic terrorists and threatened by government officials. ##

Buttigieg on Keystone pipeline: We don’t want ‘permanent solutions’ to short-term problems

Authorizing the completion of the Keystone XL pipeline to lower fuel prices and give the United States more leverage against Russia would amount to “galloping after permanent solutions to immediate short term problems,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in an interview with MSNBC late Wednesday.

Amid skyrocketing oil prices accompanying Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Republican governors and lawmakers are urging President Biden to reverse his cancellation of Keystone on his first day in office and use some of the 9,000 untapped oil leases on public lands to counter dependence on Russian oil.

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle, the host of “The 11th Hour,” acknowledged the president “does not set the price of gas,” but she argued “he can influence it.”

“And while releasing some strategic reserves matters, given how much has been released, it is really just a drop in the bucket,” she said. “Are there things, and I realize this is controversial, it has huge environmental impacts, could the president possibly consider authorizing the Keystone Pipeline? Or working something out with Iran?”

“Look,” Buttigieg replied, “the president has said that all options are on the table. But we also need to make sure that we are not galloping after permanent solutions to immediate short term problems, where more strategic and tactical actions in the short term that can make a difference, like what you have with the strategic reserve, which exists partly in order to respond to situations like this.”

The Keystone pipeline was to carry an estimated 830,000 barrels of oil per day from Canada to the United States. In his State of the Union address Tuesday, Biden said the U.S. will join with other governments to release 60 million barrels of crude oil from strategic reserves, including 30 million from the U.S. However, the U.S. alone consumes an average of about 20 million barrels of oil per day.

The transportation secretary insisted Biden “has laid policies that are going help cushion the impacts of any volatility in energy markets in the future by building up more of a diversified and homegrown energy base for this country.”

At the White House on Thursday, press secretary Jen Psaki said authorizing the Keystone pipeline would have no immediate impact.

And she said the U.S. has “no strategic interest in banning Russian oil,” arguing it makes up “only about 10% of what we are importing.”

However, on Thursday, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for a ban on all oil and gas imports from Russia in response to Putin’s “diabolical actions.”

“Ban it. Ban the oil coming from Russia,” Pelosi said at her weekly press conference in the Capitol.

But Pelosi told reporters she is against drilling on U.S. public lands.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Pelosi not only wants to ban oil from Russia, she wants to ban it from America.

“Democrats aren’t trying to punish Russia OR help Americans,” he wrote on Twitter. “They actually want gas prices to be as high as possible so they can scam you with their radical Green New Deal.”

Cutting off Russian supplies means even HIGHER costs for Americans

Many reports this week have pointed out that Joe Biden is in a box from which he cannot emerge victorious because of his decisions – all tied to claims about the threats of climate change – to trash the American oil industry and subsidize Vladimir Putin’s exports.

One of the many charges came from the Billings Gazette, which pointed out the “rising fuel prices” across America that already were pushed sky high because of Biden’s decision to actively fight energy production in America.

One of those moves was his cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline, which alone had it been operating right now would have more than replaced all of the oil America has been purchasing from Russia.

Gasoline costs for consumers were surging again because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its deadly attacks on civilians, including women and children.

The fact is under President Trump, America was exporting and selling energy. Under Biden, it’s turned again into a dependency on foreigners.

But for Biden to reverse course and work to restore the energy production likely would cause a collapse of support on which he depends from green energy and climate change supporters.

Members of Congress, including far-left House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, already have called on Biden to stop Russian oil imports – the hundreds of millions of barrels per month.

“If there was a poll being taken and they said, ‘Joe, would you pay 10 cents more per gallon to support the people of Ukraine and stop the support of Russia?’ I would gladly pay 10 cents more per gallon,” explained Sen Joe Manchin, D-W.V.

One problem for Biden is that prices already have surged by about a dollar per gallon since he took office, because of his attacks on the industry that is so essential to the nation’s security.

Biden, so far, has pledged to continue giving Putin hundreds of millions of dollars a month for oil.

The report said, “In the minds of U.S. oil companies, now is the time for the federal government to take action to ramp up U.S. oil and gas production, both for the benefit of U.S. consumers and allies abroad.”

The American Petroleum Institute already has told Biden to put permits for drilling on federal lands on a fast track, and this week Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, proposed a plan to accelerate energy projects involving oil, gas, solar, wind and geothermal.

He said, “In the past year with Joe Biden as president, the United States has lost its status as a net petroleum exporter. Why? Because on day one of his administration, President Biden issued illegal and hostile orders aimed at American oil and gas producers, which have increased energy prices and directed profits to other oil exporting countries.”

The Houston Chronicle, in one of the nation’s best energy-producing regions, said bluntly Biden is confronted by “competing pressures” over energy and their prices.

A report in the Boston Globe pointed out that Russian sources accounted for 8% of 2021 oil imports int the U.S.

“Among the implications of an oil ban the White House is assessing is if the move would actually hurt the Russian economy, or if the crude would simply go to other markets and drive up U.S. gasoline prices,” the report said.

That’s as gasoline was at $3.84 a gallon and crude oil as more than $115 a barrel.

The White House has advocated “other options” rather than cutting of payments to Russia.

“Our objective and the president’s objective has been to maximize impact on Russia while minimizing impact to us and our allies and partners,” spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at a briefing Thursday.

The Daily Mail in the United Kingdom explained that the Biden administration was so unsettled by the dilemma that when reporters shouted questions at Biden on Thursday, asking, “Will you ban Russian oil?” the press pool was ushered out.

“He said No! Let’s go!” a Biden staffer ordered. But reporters said they hadn’t heard Biden respond at all.

Psaki, when interrogated about why the White House canceled the Keystone project and many others, tried to pin the blame on the oil industry, saying there are 9,000 approved oil leases that the oil companies were not tapping into immediately.

She did, however, push for more clean energy investments. “If we do more to invest in clean energy, if we do more to invest in other sources of energy, that’s exactly what we can do to prevent this from happening in the future.”

At Slay News a report documented how U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, bluntly accused Biden of “financing” Russia’s deadly attacks on Ukrainian civilians.

He said, “We should have started by sanctioning their oil and gas. … We should have sanctioned Putin, sanctioned their central bank. All of the big heavy sanctions, some of them which haven’t even been done like oil and gas right now. Those should have been done immediately, and the agreement should have been you pull your troops off of the Ukrainian border and stop threatening the Ukrainian people, and we will release the sanctions.”

He pointed out at the current price of more than $100 per barrel, and America’s purchase of 600,000 barrels a day from Russia, Putin’s pocketbook is being enriched.

“It’s unbelievable that we’re allowing this to happen. We are actually financing their efforts to kill Ukrainians. It’s shameful,” he said. ##

Ignoring the lessons of history is routinely painful in the end.

The Ukrainian invasion by Russia is just one of several examples of the current de facto U.S. Biden administration failing in several ways to avert an invasion that Biden announced in advance was coming. If they knew it was coming, why not reverse course on the Keystone XL pipeline and domestic oil drilling? Why is the U.S. essentially financing Russian aggression by buying Russian oil? The same has been true for some in the European Union too, so this isn’t to simply pin the blame on the current White House occupant.

Arguably by rewarding Buffett-led Berkshire and other U.S. special interests starting from day one of his occupation of the Oval Office, Biden has set up the circumstances which practically begged Russian leader Vladmir Putin to go after his long-sought prize of retaking the Ukraine, once part of the old Soviet Union.

But an analogous scenario has long been occurring with China too. The rationale for U.S. trade with Communist China is as flawed as doing trade with Russia for energy supplies.

2022 is an election year. Like his tweets or not, the 45th President, Donald Trump, is about to make a comeback with us own social media platform, Truth Social. He has been supporting, campaigning for, and fundraising on behalf of Republican candidates who de facto commit to following his “America First” agenda.

With some 30 House Democrats already announcing their retirements, CNN said: “House Democrats are retiring in numbers not seen in decades.” This, CNN observed, makes it unlikely that they keep the House this fall. While claims of the GOP retaking a 50-50 U.S. Senate are not as assured yet, some believe that both chambers will go Republican in a reaction against Democratic performance vs. Democratic promises made in 2020.

While pre-COVID19 business, employment, and financial conditions were better for millions of Americans under Trump than they are under the Biden junta, that by itself isn’t enough to assure manufactured hosing independents. What’s necessary is a campaign pre- and post-2022 elections to get the message of the good news of manufactured housing out. Persuading the public is as or more valuable as persuading politicos.

The industry’s job is straightforward, and not complex, when boiled down to its essence. Provide a good product, service it well, make customers and manufactured home community residents happy. Promote the good news of manufactured housing as the most proven solution for the affordable housing crisis. Get lawmakers and/or regulators to enforce good existing laws. These are summed up in Protect – Educate – Promote = P.E.P.

But MHI has postured without doing. The Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR), is a producers trade group, not a post-production trade group. Yet, without MHARR, the question could be raised – how many independent producers of HUD Code manufactured homes would remain without their fighting as they have? By extension, how much worse might it be for the remaining retailers, suppliers, installers, transporters, and independent community operators?

This writer asked Tim Williams/21st Mortgage Corporation during an MHI breakout session about a decade ago a simple question. Why doesn’t MHI sue to get good law like the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act’s (MHIA) enhanced preemption provision enforced? Williams, with dozens watching, looked me in the eyes, smiled, and said that at some point that may become necessary. But before MHI sues, they will try other things.

A decade later, why are MHI’s independents still waiting for what was effectively promised by not delivered?

It could be this simple. Protect the industry. Educate officials and the public. Promote by behaving in a white hat fashion and through proper messaging and engagement. PEP. With good behavior, the industry will grow. With bad behavior by several MHI member brands, the industry may grow, but not as fast and not as assured for white hat independents.

MHProNews will continue to do what authentic media is supposed to do. Namely, shine a light into dark places. Hold leaders and organizations accountable.

Time will tell if MHI leaders have gotten the message that their time may be coming to an end before worse consequences that would be entirely lawful – worse than mere embarrassment – befalls them.
