California Housing Crisis, HUD Secretary Ben Carson, and Manufactured Housing

Housing costs in California are rising faster than other states. Between January 2012 and January 2019, list prices for homes rose 85.4%. Here are three of the key conditions that sent prices soaring,” says the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) YouTube page that sports this video, below.

Just weeks after the Innovative Housing Showcase (HIS) on the Washington Mall, Fox Business had this short interview with HUD Secretary Carson, below the graphic. It describes some of the same issues that the WSJ video did.  There is no mention of manufactured homes in that video.

There is no question that Secretary Carson has done more to publicly promote the proper understanding and increased use of manufactured homes than any HUD Secretary in the 21st century.

HUD produced several videos, as MHProNews has previously reported, during and since IHS.

Whether it is videos by the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), HUD, or mainstream media reports, what has not yet been seen is a report where Secretary Carson uses the words “enhanced preemption” with respect to manufactured homes.

Our sources tell us that HUD’s Brian Montgomery certainly knows about enhanced preemption. Does Dr. Carson? That is disputed. As noted, there is no public evidence MHProNews is aware of at this time that reflects Secretary Carson saying the words “enhanced preemption” with respect to manufactured homes. No surprise, perhaps, because MHI doesn’t has lacked those words on their website as we’ve repeatedly demonstrated.

Given that Lesli Gooch, Ph.D., Richard ‘Dick’ Jennison, Mark Bowersox, and now former MHI General Counsel Rick Robinson all are among those at MHI that could have brought this issue to Dr. Carson’s attention face-to-face, it is a troubling concern.

California is just one place that land-use policies are keeping affordable housing away from potentially hundreds of thousands if not millions of people.
