“Watched – You’re Likely Already on a Government Watchlist” and “2024 Is the New 1984: The Rise of the Security Industrial Complex” were provided by the Rutherford Institute to MHProNews. In this brief preface to their second named op-ed, MHProNews would note that there are things that the Rutherford Institute’s John and Nisha Whitehead have published that MHProNews would editorially disagree with, sometimes strongly. But the same would be true for almost any merely human source. That said, John Whitehead is a constitutional attorney who believes in ‘speaking truth to power.’ Following this thoughtful op-ed will be additional information which will include other select items by Whithead from “Watched” along with more MHProNews analysis and commentary in brief.
Part II – Additional Information with More Masthead on MHProNews Analysis and Commentary
“We’re all potential victims.” — Peter Christ, retired police officer … “Sometimes ten seconds is all the warning you get.”
“In a closed society where everybody’s guilty, the only crime is getting caught.” — Hunter S. Thompson.
Those quotes above and the ones that follow are also from constitutional attorney Whitehead.
When the FBI is asking banks and other financial institutions to carry out dragnet searches of customer transactions—warrantlessly and without probable cause—for “extremism” indicators broadly based on where you shop, what you read, and how you travel, we’re all in trouble.
Clearly, you don’t have to do anything illegal.
You don’t even have to challenge the government’s authority.
Frankly, you don’t even have to care about politics or know anything about your rights. …”
In fact, all you need to do these days to end up on a government watch list or be subjected to heightened scrutiny is use certain trigger words (like cloud, pork and pirates), surf the internet, communicate using a cell phone, limp or stutter, drive a car, stay at a hotel, attend a political rally, express yourself on social media, appear mentally ill, serve in the military, disagree with a law enforcement official, call in sick to work, purchase materials at a hardware store, take flying or boating lessons, appear suspicious, appear confused or nervous, fidget or whistle or smell bad, be seen in public waving a toy gun or anything remotely resembling a gun (such as a water nozzle or a remote control or a walking cane), stare at a police officer, question government authority, or appear to be pro-gun or pro-freedom.”
To say such things some 15 or 20 years ago may have seemed foolish or extreme to numbers of Americans. But the revelations made by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden during the Obama-Biden Administration helped change that perception.
Part of the practical answer to such problems ought to be enforcement of Constitutional limits to the behaviors of government officials and others. But part of the problem, as Rutherford and others across the left-center-right spectrum have observed, is that government officials all-too-often are ignoring the Constitution and ignoring the laws.
The good news is that in the U.S., we have a Constitution that limits the genuine authority people in office are supposed to wield.
Americans are said to be in a period being referred to as an awakening. If so, that’s good.
Adults need sufficient understanding of our nation and world. The reason we have the kinds of problems that Whitehead, Snowden, Greenwald, Hanne N. Herland and others have identified is precisely because too many Americans trusted that the system would work as if on autopilot.
Ronald Reagan famously observed that freedom isn’t free. It must be zealously guarded.
What makes the Whitehead’s observations above interesting is that he too is tying this power structure into the notion of corporate power combined with state power. Political cartoonist A.F. Branco framed it like the image below. Perhaps Branco could have framed more like both guns – Big Gov and Big Corporate America – are each pointed at U.S. Citizens.
Our profession is struggling in part because of the nexus between state and government power.
A new report will be published on the Daily Business News on MHProNews later today, which will be linked up as it is related and relevant. It will further underscore the concerns raised by Whitehead and others.
Link will be added here
Until then, see the other linked and related reports below to learn more. Because freedom isn’t free. Freedom must be safeguarded. Vote wisely like your freedom depends on it, because it does. As founding father Thomas Jefferson wrote:
“…in questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the constitution.”
By limiting the power of government and public officials, the rights of “We the People” are maximized. Along with those chains of the Constitution ought to be coupled with a sound grasp of the need for a moral code that guides the lives of people of good will. The need to reign in corporate power is explored in the second link below. ##
