11) As someone who had worked in manufactured housing starting in the 1980s (about a decade doing other things – RVs, O+/-, trade show marketing) for over 30 years and having studied business at and after years in the university, it seemed like an opportunity to fill a void. A common mantra of business is to find a need and fill it. In hindsight, it has been admitted that there was a level of naiveite.  In hindsight, one might wonder: how is it that when multi-billion-dollar corporations were involved in manufactured housing, how could the industry slide so far from its last high in 1998?

 

In hindsight, it would seem that the powers that be in manufactured housing wanted to see sources of information like the MH Merchandiser or the Journal of Manufactured Housing in the industry to vaporize. MHI’s own Modern Homes was allowed to fail. But why?

 

 

To grasp what has gone wrong in manufactured housing one must be willing to think in a contrarian fashion. It is said that well-grounded contrarian thinking is often produces better results. While debatable, that view of contrarian thinking is also supported by evidence.

MHI’s leaders, in hindsight, clearly allowed the industry to slip. They apparently wanted – or were at least willing to allow – the array of publications that served this industry to fail. The purpose of this postscript is not to answer that question, but to show that the question needs to be asked and answered. Because access to sound information and access to capital are among the ingredients for success in any business.

 

It might have been easy for some to walk away from MHProNews when MHI’s leaders clearly turned against this publication.

 

 

It is when the darkness becomes profound that the light of a single candle seems to shine brightest. Per Google’s preview AI.

Everyone, without exception, needs a guiding light. There is an evidence-based argument to be made that we all innately want pure truth, light, and love. Some of our most faithful readers are those we critique. There are many reasons for that, but among them psychologists might say that there is a gnawing inner voice that bids us to face our errors. Manufactured housing has failed in the 21st century to achieve its potential for an array of reasons. But perhaps at or near the top is that those who should have been fighting for the truths about our industry have clearly failed to do so properly. Toe in the water advocacy is not advocacy. That is why the “Acid Test” was so important.

 

 

For any problem, there must be a goal, understanding, a vision of how to accomplish that goal, etc. It was naively thought in launching what became MHProNews that our team had that vision and was going to show the industry how to recover. By coincidence or not, it was after MHProNews launched that the industry bottomed out, and began the slow, long slog upward in production. But note the difference in how these two graphics are presented. The first, from Cavco’s investor relations pitch. The second by MHProNews. While the information covers some similar points and years, Cavco begin essentially at the industry’s bottom. Our graphic begins with the mid-to-late 1990s when production was routinely over 3 times what it is today, despite the fact that the population has grown and good laws meant to support the industry exist.

 

 

The major world religions clearly teach the evil of deception.  We stand by the decision to launch MHProNews, despite the fact that we were naïve about why the industry was suffering. It simply could not have suffered as it has unless some of the largest and most powerful interests in the industry wanted it to suffer.

ChatGPT figured that out quickly, as Part I reflects. What has occurred is per an array of professionals that are third-parties to our industry, violations of various laws including antitrust laws.

 

As traffic grows from MHVille FEA style of journalism, it just may be that enough readers are struck by the evidence that public officials will have little choice but to act.  Never forget that  the Madoff, Enron, WorldCom and other scandals operated for years before they were finally exposed.

 

Until critical mass is achieved, expect the status quo to more or less remain. That is what the Acid Test proved. When was the last time you saw media accurately predict in advance what would happen as a result of an event like the Innovative Housing Showcase?

 

 

ChatGPT is not the only new effort being launched by this publication. The crystal ball that worked for the Acid Test is different than different than trying to predict what will come next. Life, including life in trade publishing, is an adventure. God only knows what will happen next.
