If someone is looking to communicate to/address only manufactured housing industry professionals, as useful and important as that audience is, a look at the data quickly makes it apparent that the manufactured home professional audience – relative compared to the U.S. population – is tiny. According to Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) member Next Step, here is the formula used by MHI to calculate measurable activity in the manufactured housing industry with the number of jobs that activity supports. Per Next Step in an article entitled the Economic Impact of Factory Built Housing (FBH), “the production and installation of every 100 HUD Code homes supports approximately 75 full-time jobs across the manufacturing, transportation, and retail sectors.” As Gemini pointed out, there are consequences to the reported sharp fall in production in January 2026 reported this week by the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR-see that Part I). Real lives are impacted. That noted, let’s look at the math of how many are working in the manufactured housing industry today. MHARR reported 102,738 total homes produced in 2025 x .75 = 77,053.5. Each of those pending Kovach op-eds are unique and should draw more attention to the potential and problems facing both the national need for millions of more inherently affordable housing units and the manufactured housing industry’s specific “bottleneck” issues more broadly.
