4,556 Manufactured Homes Shipped in October 2009, Down 35.2 Percent from October 2008

Arlington, VA, December 15, 2009—The Manufactured Housing Institute’s actual shipments report indicates that 4,556 new HUD-Code homes were shipped in October 2009, down 35.2 percent from October 2008. Shipments of single-section homes were down 35.2 percent, year over year, while shipments of multi-section homes were down 35.3 percent.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of shipments was 46,400 in October, down 10.8 percent from the rate of 52,000 posted in September. The SAAR corrects for normal seasonal variations in shipments and projects an annual shipments pace based on the current monthly total.

Year to date, shipments are down 41.5 percent. Single-section shipments are down 39.6 percent, while multi-section shipments are down 42.6 percent.

Year-over-year shipments were down in all nine Divisions. Shipments were down in the East North Central (-47.7 percent), West North Central (-45.9 percent), New England (-38.8 percent), Mountain (-38.5 percent), Pacific (-36.7 percent), South Atlantic (-34.3 percent), West South Central (-33.2 percent), Middle Atlantic (-28.1 percent), and East South Central (-21.3 percent) Divisions.

In October 2009, shipments were down in 44 states and flat in five states, compared to October 2008. Shipments were flat in Nebraska, Alaska, New Mexico, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Shipments were down in Michigan (-79.4 percent), Minnesota (-71.3 percent), Utah (-67.9 percent), Maryland (-66.7 percent), Connecticut (-65.6 percent), Wyoming (-58.6 percent), Nevada (-58.1 percent), Iowa (-56.8 percent), Colorado (-53.4 percent), Wisconsin (-52.6 percent), Georgia (-51.3 percent), North Dakota (-49.1 percent), Arizona (-48.6 percent), South Dakota (-47.8 percent), Illinois (-47.8 percent), West Virginia (-45 percent), Washington (-44.9 percent), Delaware (-44.8 percent), Maine (-42.3 percent), Louisiana (-41.4 percent), Oregon (-40.9 percent), Vermont (-39.1 percent), New Jersey (-37.5 percent), Mississippi (-36.7 percent), Indiana (-34.1 percent), North Carolina (-33.4 percent), Missouri (-33.3 percent), Texas (-32.9 percent), Florida (-31.3 percent), New York (-30.4 percent), California (-28.7 percent), New Hampshire (-26.1 percent), South Carolina (-26 percent) , Pennsylvania (-24.2 percent), Alabama (-21.7 percent), Ohio (-21.7 percent), Idaho (-20.8 percent), Oklahoma (-20.8 percent), Montana (-17.5 percent), Arkansas (-12.5 percent), Kentucky (-12.4 percent), Kansas (-12 percent), Tennessee (-10.8 percent) and Virginia (-6.4 percent).

Total floors shipped in October were 7,508, down 35.2 percent from October 2008.

The number of reporting plants for October was 156, unchanged from September 2009. The number of corporations was 61, also unchanged from September. More details will be forthcoming in MHI’s Monthly Economic Report for October.
