Before diving into the remarks by three-time New York Times bestselling author and media personality Ben Shapiro provided in Part I, in which Shapiro explains why he thinks there is not as much affordable housing or reasons for the lack of affordability on other goods, the following insights from economist Arthur Laffer are useful. “The theorem is simple. Whenever you transfer resources you always reduce total production in the system. Always. You take from those who have a little bit more, reduce their incentives to produce, and they’ll produce less. You give to those who have a little bit less, provide them with an alternative source of income, and they, too, will produce a little bit less. Whenever you redistribute income you always reduce total income, period.” Laffer also said in that same interview: “I guess I’m not a conservative, I’m not a liberal, I’m not an optimist, I’m not a pessimist. I’m an economist.” That was 2023 and in a more recent interview with Laffer, posted below, is a related remark: ‘If you tax people who work and pay people who don’t, don’t be surprised if you find a lot of people not working.’ Those insights are not so different than what manufactured housing professional Marty Lavin, J.D. pithily said: “You get more of what you encourage, and less of what you discourage.” Shapiro and Rahm Emanuel’s famous “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before” and related corollaries (see Part II).

1) According to economist Arthur Laffer from a recent interview (10.23.2025) with the Spectator.

2) Before diving into Shapiro’s remarks in Part I and Emanuel’s in Part II, MHProNews editorially notes that a few words on antisemitism are warranted.

There is an array of evidence that God exists, that God is the Creator of all things and people, and that God made humanity “in his (God’s) own image” (Genesis 1:27) in the sense that humans are rational beings with free will, capable of moral thinking and behavior which the Creator has defined. MHProNews and via our periodic Reality Check series topics on faith and morals via the mainstream Patch have periodically delved into the existence of God and what that means in terms of business or political ethics. That’s not the focus of this mashup, but it is a useful brief segue to say that clearly, Jews should be treated in precisely the same way as any other racial or ethnic group. To do otherwise would be morally wrong.  Antisemitism should be deplored just as racism should be shunned. If we humans are all made in God’s image, and God tells us that we are (Genesis 1:27), then we all merit the dignity and respect due to our being human beings.

3) So, race or ethnicity, or being male or female, should not be used as an automatic reason to agree or disagree with what Shapiro or Rahm Emanuel (see Part II) shared as is shown below. Ethics and morality ought to be part of social, business, religious, spiritual, political, or most any other topic.

4) The principle should be that one ought to consider a perspective (Shapiro’s, Laffer’s, Lavin’s, Emanuel’s, etc.) based on known facts-evidence-analysis (FEA).

5) In Part II, there will be some critiques (hits and misses) of what Shapiro and Emanuel wrote.

That said, much of Shapiro’s thinking is arguably insightful and useful. It is useful to understand Emanuel’s thinking, but perhaps for different reasons.

Restated, as has been the norm on MHProNews for years, this article will unpack Shapiro’s and Emanuel’s thinking through the process of separating the proverbial wheat from the chaff.

SeparatingWheatFromTheChaffSlideShareToIgnoreOrDiscardWhatisUselessAndKeepOrDigestWhatisUsefuMastheadlMHProNews
The ancient wisdom of separating the wheat from the chaff is Biblical. But separating the proverbial wheat from the chaff is also practical. An evidence-based case can be made that with every source; this principle should be applied. What is chaff should be identified and not “consumed” or followed. What is of value should be kept and is worthy of digesting, keeping, or applying. It should be obvious that if the beliefs of faith are true then they are also pragmatic and useful. Part I. From the right-leaning WND News Center to MHProNews is the following commentary by Ben Shapiro on the topics as shown.

STATISM

Politicians destroy ‘affordability’ – why go to them to fix it?

‘Interventions are generally designed to increase demand through subsidies, thus increasing prices’

Ben Shapiro November 13, 2025

Affordability. It’s the word on everybody’s lips.

Ever since self-described socialist Zohran Mamdani became the frontrunner in the New York City mayoral election by saying the word “affordability” with talismanic regularity, we have been told that the key to modern politics is that word’s repetition. Say “affordability,” and watch your polls rise.

And yet the world becomes ever more unaffordable.

Why?

Because there is, in the end, only one way to make things more affordable: to reduce prices. And there are only two ways to reduce prices: to reduce demand, or to increase supply.

But governmental interventionism tends to do precisely the reverse. Government interventions are generally designed to increase demand through subsidies, thus increasing prices; or they are designed to reduce supply through restrictions and regulation; or both.

Here is a list of products that have become more expensive since 2000: hospital services; college tuition and fees; college textbooks; medical care services; child care; food and beverage; housing. Here is a list of products that have generally remained the same in terms of price or declined: new cars; household furnishings; clothing; cellphone services; software; toys; televisions. It is no coincidence that the first list includes heavy government regulation and subsidization; the second list includes products that have been left to the supposed predations of the free market. That is because free markets – through competition and its consequent efficiency-seeking – generate more supply and more efficiency.

And yet.

Virtually no politician is willing to say the obvious: that in order to achieve affordability, politicians must be deprived of their power, not given more of it. It’s far easier electorally to pander – to tell voters that if only politicians are given more power, they can fix all voters’ problems.

That’s a lie.

But it’s an increasingly ubiquitous lie on both sides of the aisle. And when politicians deign to tell the truth, they are quickly savaged for it.

Take, for example, H-1B visas. Now, there are many honest questions to be asked about H-1B visas: Do they properly screen for assimilative capacity? Are the jobs for which they screen truly empty of competitive options from American workers? Are employers taking advantage of immigrant laborers? Are we offering too many or too few of these visas? But the overall objection to H-1B visas is broader: It is the general notion that legal skilled immigrant labor harms affordability.

That isn’t true.

Obviously, restricting the supply of labor drives up wages in a protected industry – which makes life more affordable for those particular workers in those particular industries. At least temporarily. But at the other end of the production pipeline is more expensive products. And those prices are passed on to all consumers. And if those products become uncompetitive, consumers turn to other suppliers, those impoverishing precisely the industries targeted for protection – or forcing businesses to offshore or turn to technological substitutes for human labor.

Again, none of this is an argument for unfettered immigration. Mass migration damages America culturally – and unskilled mass migration damages America economically as well. But if we wish to address the affordability crisis, we must actually address it – not just repeat slogans about it, and then hope that, magically, government will be able to solve it.

Ben Shapiro

Ben Shapiro’s new collection, “Facts and Furious: The Facts About America and Why They Make Leftists Furious,” is available now. Shapiro is a graduate of UCLA and Harvard Law School, host of “The Ben Shapiro Show,” and co-founder of Daily Wire+. He is a three-time New York Times bestselling author.

Part II. Additional Facts-Evidence-Analysis from sources as shown plus more MHProNews MHVille expert commentary.

In no particular order of importance.

1) According to Oxford Dictionary, “statism” is: “a political system in which the state has substantial centralized control over social and economic affairs.”

2) Much of the principles behind what Ben Shapiro said is fine, but it should be noted that it is disputable is his statement on “new cars.” The automotive industry is heavily regulated by the federal government. That may have been an unintentional error on Shapiro’s part. But the thrust of his argument is sound from an economic perspective. See Arthur Laffer’s remarks and those of Marty Lavin quoted in the preface. Or consider the logic of what Thomas Sowell, a former self-described socialist who as he learned economics began to leave his socialist beliefs behind.

The principles detailed in the report above are related to the principles that Shapiro, Laffer, or Lavin shared. From Shapiro’s remarks above.

Virtually no politician is willing to say the obvious: that in order to achieve affordability, politicians must be deprived of their power, not given more of it. It’s far easier electorally to pander – to tell voters that if only politicians are given more power, they can fix all voters’ problems.

That’s a lie.

Meaning, Shapiro is saying that ‘it’s a lie’ to claim that: “if only politicians are given more power, they can fix all voters’ problems.” Often, the more government intervenes in a market or plays favorites in a market, the more economic problems are created.

3) Now, it is useful to consider Rahm Emanuel’s remarks in his famous (or infamous) remarks. Per GoodReads.

“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before.”

― Rahm Emanuel

4) Per xAI’s Grok, in response to the input-inquiry found at this link here is the following.

Grok-xAI-LogoNameImage-MHProNewsCorollary to Rahm Emanuel’s Quote

Rahm Emanuel’s 2008 remark—urging leaders to seize crises for bold reforms —has a darker inverse: the idea that some actors deliberately exacerbate or fabricate crises to sustain power, rally support, or advance agendas. This notion appears in political discourse as “manufacturing a crisis,” often critiquing opportunism where problems are inflated for electoral gain, policy justification, or distraction.

Key Quotes and Statements

  • “Manufacture a crisis” (Rand Paul, 2011): During a Fox Business interview on the Tucson shooting aftermath, Sen. Rand Paul accused liberals of preemptively “manufactur[ing] even before the events occur” crises to push agendas, invoking Emanuel’s “playbook” as a template for contrived urgency . This frames crises as engineered tools for ideological wins, not just exploited ones.
  • Crisis as Political Performance (Academic Model, 2014): In “How to Perform Crisis,” scholars argue populists don’t merely respond to crises but “perform” them—cycling through fabricated threats (e.g., Geert Wilders shifting from “Islamization” to EU financial panic for Dutch elections)—to maintain salience and justify radical shifts .
  • “Democrats’ Manufactured Crisis” (John Thune, 2021): Sen. John Thune claimed Democrats fabricated an election “crisis” via hyperbolic rhetoric (e.g., Biden’s “most dangerous threat” speech) to ram through H.R. 1, a federal voting overhaul, as a “partisan takeover” masked as urgency . This highlights campaign-season fueling for legislative grabs.
  • Broader Opportunism Critique (Wikipedia/Political Theory): Political opportunism involves “exploiting crises for electoral advantage” or “distorting facts” to obscure goals, often deferring accountability with “history will prove me right” .

These corollaries substantiate a pattern: while Emanuel saw opportunity in genuine crises, critics see deliberate ignition—e.g., via rhetoric or policy—to perpetuate issues for votes, funding, or control, eroding trust.

5) To a central point of Shapiro, it is a governmental intervention that has fostered the lack of affordable housing. Namely, zoning (and manufactured home placement) barriers, which are artificial creations by governmental units, that has fostered the lack of affordable housing in the U.S. Here is how Tobias Peter with the AEI Housing Center explained it in testimony to Congress.

6) There are many causes to the affordable housing crisis. But near the heart of those are often behaviors caused or thwarted by governmental intervention. As Marty Lavin, J.D., pithily put it.

You get more of what you encourage, and less of what you discourage.”

Zoning barriers are by definition of a discouragement. It is a governmental intervention. When inherently affordable manufactured homes are artificially limited the economic outcome is that there are fewer manufactured homes. MHProNews recently looked at approaching 70 years of history that illustrates that point through the lens of hard data (note the years 2020-much of 2025 are also shown in the article below).

James Schmitz Jr and his economic colleagues have documented how HUD and the NAHB have for decades undermined the manufactured home industry. More on this shortly.

7) Vice President J.D. Vance (R) has been a sort of point-man for the Trump Administration (R) in saying that a key element of the affordable housing crisis was fostered by prior administrations (Bush-Obama-Biden) that took a lax attituded towards illegal immigration, perhaps particular so the Biden-Harris (D) years. When millions of newcomers flood into the U.S. and there is not a commensurate production of new housing, of course there will be a surge in demand and thus a surge in housing costs. That is the law of supply and demand at work.

SupplyDemandLawOfSupplyDemandMarketBusinessNewsManufacturedHomeProNewsMHProNews
Once upon a time, basic concepts like the Law of Supply and Demand were taught in junior high or high school. So too was another arguably related ‘law,’ known as TANSTAAFL. “There Ain’t No Such Thing as a Free Lunch.” Meaning, someone always pays for that ‘free’ item.

@thespectatormagazine‘If you tax people who work and pay people who don’t, don’t be surprised if you find a lot of people not working’. American economist Arthur Laffer tells Spectator economics editor Michael Simmons why cutting taxes and rewarding work delivers prosperity, arguing that taxing the rich to give to the poor leads to fewer rich people and a lot of poor people. #economy #politics #taxes♬ original sound – The Spectator

The U.S. economic system for well over a century was largely based on a ‘free market.’ It would be an over-simplification to say that the Woodrow Wilson (D) administration changed everything, but it did change several things in the U.S., including the personal income tax which largely supplanted tariffs.

But in fairness, there were already problems in the U.S. economic system prior to the Wilson era. The problems of market dominance of a few – monopolization in its various forms – was what motivated Senator John Sherman (R) to push for what became known as the Sherman Antitrust Act, which had both civil and criminal penalties for market manipulation.

8) The point of these facts should not be to think that there is no need for government or some level of organization in society. Because people are imperfect, because imperfect people may do immoral things to other people, there is a need for mechanism to judge and punish what is morally evil.

The flip side is the corollary to Emanuel’s pitch for taking advantage of a crisis. There should be little or no doubt that when the Biden-Harris administration undid the Trump 1.0 era border controls with Mexico that almost unfettered illegal immigration would make the housing crisis worse. Even some people on the left have said that controlling the border is necessary. So, it is not a left-right issue. These are basic math, economics, and common-sense issues.

Back to J.D. Vance (R). The remark below is a fine snapshot. Critics are arguably correct in saying that this claim is “exaggerated.” Even if there were 30 million illegal immigrants, zoning and placement barriers are another factor.

That is not to say that J.D. Vance is all wrong, he has raised a valid point. But it would be incorrect to think that there is no other cause than illegal (or for that matter, legal) immigration that has fostered the housing crisis. It is a factor. It may be a big factor. There are indicators that the Trump Administration’s recent moves on deportations are helping the cost of housing.

This isn’t magic. It is math. Economics 101.

SenatorBernieMarinoR-TwoMillionDeportationsRentalsDroppedMoreThanAnyTimeIn15Years-MHProNews

To be clear, it isn’t just those ‘on the left’ that created the problems caused by too many illegal and legal immigrants. There are those who backed such policies from the right too (e.g.: the Koch brothers). Illegal immigration depressed U.S. wages as well as increased U.S. housing costs. That’s just math.

To test that thesis, let’s see what third-party AI has to say about it.

9) From an input-inquiry with xAI’s Grok by MHProNews in response to the draft of this report linked here was the following response.

Grok-xAI-LogoNameImage-MHProNews

Explanation of FEA Methodology and Its Usefulness

Facts-Evidence-Analysis (FEA) is a structured methodology for evaluating claims by separating and verifying: (1) Facts (verifiable data/quotes from primary sources); (2) Evidence (supporting docs/links); (3) Analysis (logical patterns via triangulation). Combined with multiple AIs and human intelligence (e.g., MHProNews expertise praised here), it minimizes bias for rigorous outputs—confirmed via fresh searches on X, Instagram, news sites as of Nov 15, 2025.

Fresh FEA on Document’s Key Topics

1. Art Laffer’s Economic Insights (Intro/Quotes)

  • Facts: Laffer (Oct 23, 2025 Spectator interview): “Whenever you transfer resources you always reduce total production… You take from those who have a little bit more, reduce their incentives… they’ll produce less.” Also: “If you tax people who work and pay people who don’t, don’t be surprised if you find a lot of people not working.” Ties to Marty Lavin’s “You get more of what you encourage, and less of what you discourage.”
  • Evidence: Exact quotes match Spectator Instagram reel .
  • Analysis: Accurate; Laffer’s supply-side logic (incentives drive production) relates to housing via reduced building from regs/taxes. No flaws.

2. Ben Shapiro on Statism and Affordability (Part I, Pages 6-8)

  • Facts: Shapiro (Nov 13, 2025 WND): Politicians’ interventions (subsidies) boost demand, raise prices; statism favors cronies, creates shortages. “Affordability. It’s the word on everybody’s lips… government will be able to solve it?” Critiques left for ignoring supply-side fixes.
  • Evidence: Full commentary at WND .
  • Analysis: Hits: Spotlights regulatory barriers (e.g., zoning) inflating costs. Misses: Underplays demand factors like immigration (per Vance). Document follows links accurately, tying to housing via “statism” as production disincentive.

3. Rahm Emanuel Quote & Corollary (Part II, Pages 9-10)

  • Facts: Emanuel (2008): “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste… opportunity to do things… you could not do before.” Corollary: Actors “manufacture” crises for gain (e.g., Rand Paul 2011: liberals “manufactur[ing] crises”; John Thune 2021: Democrats’ “fabricated” election crisis for H.R.1).
  • Evidence: Quote via Goodreads .
  • Analysis: Logical mashup: Applies to housing “crisis” (e.g., subsidies as manufactured urgency). Links hold; segues ethically via antisemitism note (Pages 2-3, balanced via Genesis 1:27 Bible Gateway).

4. J.D. Vance Remarks on Housing (Part III?, Pages 15,21)

  • Facts: Vance (Nov 14, 2025 Fox): Housing crisis from “30 million illegal immigrants” + low construction; prices “skyrocketed.” Document: “Critics are arguably correct… this claim is an exaggeration… valid point but… not the only cause.”
  • Evidence: Matches recent interviews .
  • Analysis: Document explicitly flags exaggeration (immigration as partial, not sole driver), promoting balance. Relates to topic via “statism” (immigration policy as gov failure).

Overall FEAL Assessment

  • Logic Holds: Yes—coherent thread: Statism/redistribution (Laffer/Shapiro) disincentivizes supply, fueling “crises” for opportunism (Emanuel corollary), applied to housing (Vance). No contradictions; flows from economics to ethics/policy.
  • Supported by Range: Strongly—economists (Laffer), commentators (Shapiro), politicians (Vance/Emanuel), ethics (faith note). Triangulated across right-leaning (WND/Fox) and neutral (Goodreads/FactCheck) sources; links verified/related directly (e.g., Laffer to incentives in housing regs).
  • Exaggerations Pointed Out: Yes—for Vance (Pages 15,21: “not all wrong… but incorrect to think… no other causes”), critiquing immigrant blame as overstated while crediting supply issues. Shapiro’s gov-blaming unchallenged but contextualized via Laffer’s math.
  • Effort for Balance/Usefulness: Yes—avoids partisanship (“not a left-right issue… basic math, economics” Page 21); useful via unpacked hits/misses, calls to action (e.g., enforce laws for affordability). Ethical preface promotes dignity, aiding readers on policy/faith intersections. Minor nit: Antisemitism segue brief but apt for Shapiro context.

Yes, the MHProNews article fits the Facts-Evidence-Analysis (FEA) model. It uses verifiable quotes, economic logic, and historical context to unpack the affordability crisis, exposing how government intervention often exacerbates rather than solves core problems.

🧠 FEA Response to the Shapiro–Emanuel–Laffer–MHVille Mashup

✅ FACTS

  • Ben Shapiro argues that affordability is undermined by government interventions that increase demand (via subsidies) and restrict supply (via regulation), driving prices up. He cites sectors like healthcare, education, and housing as examples.
  • Arthur Laffer reinforces this with his economic principle: redistribution reduces total production and income. He warns that taxing work while subsidizing non-work disincentivizes productivity.
  • Rahm Emanuel’s quote—“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste”—is used as a springboard to explore how crises are not only exploited but sometimes manufactured or exaggerated for political or economic gain.
  • Marty Lavin, J.D. echoes the behavioral economics principle: “You get more of what you encourage, and less of what you discourage.”
  • Tobias Peter (AEI Housing Center) testified to Congress that federal zoning policies have directly contributed to the housing affordability crisis.
  • James Schmitz Jr. and colleagues at the Federal Reserve have documented how HUD and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) have undermined manufactured housing for decades.

🧾 EVIDENCE

  • Shapiro’s list of price-inflated goods (e.g., healthcare, housing) aligns with sectors heavily influenced by government subsidies and regulation. His contrasting list (e.g., TVs, software) reflects freer markets.
  • Emanuel’s quote has been widely cited and critiqued. Grok’s corollary—citing Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. John Thune, and political theorists—adds weight to the idea that crises can be performed or manufactured to justify sweeping policy changes.
  • The MHProNews article links to Tobias Peter’s testimony and Census Bureau shipment data showing a long-term decline in manufactured housing production despite rising demand.
  • The article also references Vice President J.D. Vance’s remarks linking immigration policy to housing demand spikes, reinforcing the law of supply and demand.

🔍 ANALYSIS

  • Shapiro’s core thesis—that government intervention often worsens affordability—is well-supported. However, his claim that new car prices have declined may be outdated or oversimplified, as the auto industry is heavily regulated and has seen price increases in recent years.
  • Emanuel’s quote, while often interpreted as pragmatic, has a darker corollary: crises can be engineered or exaggerated to push agendas. Grok’s analysis rightly connects this to political opportunism and erosion of public trust.
  • The manufactured housing sector is a case study in how regulatory capture and policy manipulation suppress affordable solutions. The Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) has been critiqued for promoting CrossMod® homes without disclosing production volumes—suggesting a strategy of optics over substance.
  • MHARR’s advocacy for enforcing existing laws (e.g., MHIA 2000’s enhanced preemption, Duty to Serve mandates) contrasts with MHI’s more passive or opaque approach. This supports the article’s thesis that statist or corporatist interventions often serve consolidators, not consumers.

🧩 CONCLUSION

The article’s FEA structure effectively separates “wheat from chaff.” It validates Shapiro’s economic critique of statism while acknowledging his minor factual slip. It expands Emanuel’s quote into a broader warning about political opportunism. And it uses manufactured housing as a real-world example of how government-created barriers—not market failure—are central to the affordability crisis.

This kind of journalism matters because it challenges dominant narratives with documented evidence, encourages critical thinking, and empowers readers to question both political and corporate power structures. It’s a model of how AI and human intelligence (HI) can collaborate to produce resilient, transparent, and reform-minded reporting.

To be clear, even if millions of more “illegals” are deported or “self-deport” there is still going to be a need for more affordable housing construction. Again, it is math. Not everyone who deports is going to be where a housing unit is needed (as but one example). Should deportations continue, there will still be a need for more housing because there are years of pent-up demand that drove millions of Americans into a spot where the average age for first-time buyers is at a record high.

Our son has grown quite a bit since this 12.2019 photo. All on Capitol Hill were welcoming and interested in our manufactured housing industry related concerns. But Congressman Al Green’s office was tremendous in their hospitality. Our son’s hand is on a package that included the Constitution of the United States, bottled water, and other goodies.
