Rent Control to Be Decided by Voters

Following up on a series of stories we have done about rent control in Oceanside, California, LLCs, the last one being June 14, North County Times reports residents have nearly twice the signatures needed for repeal, or to have a referendum.  City Council members who voted successfully to repeal the measure say they will not change their decision, but will let the citizens decide.  If rent control is phased out as the City Council voted, it would affect only new residents in the 18 land lease communities (LLC) in Oceanside.  The group opposing the measure needed to collect 7,670 signatures, but ended up with 15,400 signatures.  The county voter registrar has 30 days to validate the signatures, which will cost $30,000-$35,000.  To include the referendum on a general or primary election will cost $35,000 to $60,000.  A special election would cost over $500,000.
