3,835 Manufactured Homes Shipped in November 2009, Down 23 Percent from November 2008

Arlington, VA, January 11, 2010 – The Manufactured Housing Institute’s actual shipments report indicates that 3,835 new HUD-Code homes were shipped in November 2009, down 23 percent from November 2008. Shipments of single-section homes were down 33.1 percent, year over year, while shipments of multi-section homes were down 15.4 percent.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of shipments was 45,900 in November, down 1 percent from the rate of 46,400 posted in October. The SAAR corrects for normal seasonal variations in shipments and projects an annual shipments pace based on the current monthly total.

Year to date, shipments are down 40.3 percent. Single-section shipments are down 39.1 percent, while multi-section shipments are down 41.0 percent.

Year-over-year shipments were down in all nine Divisions. Shipments were down in the East North Central (-40.5 percent), Pacific (-30.9 percent), Mountain (-27.6 percent), New England (-21.7 percent), East South Central (-21.3 percent), South Atlantic (-34.3 percent), West South Central (-33.2 percent), Middle Atlantic (-28.1 percent), and East South Central (-21.3 percent) Divisions.

In November 2009, shipments were down in 28 states, up in nine states and flat in twelve states, compared to November 2008. Shipments were up in Massachusetts (175 percent), Iowa (46.7 percent), Arkansas (46.4 percent), Tennessee (21 percent), West Virginia (16.3 percent), South Carolina (13.1 percent), Florida (10.6 percent), Virginia (7.7 percent) and Kentucky (3.9 percent). Shipments were flat in New Jersey, South Dakota, Nevada, Delaware, Vermont, Kansas, Montana, Missouri, Alaska, Mississippi, Colorado and Rhode Island.

Shipments were down in Maryland (-94.3 percent), Connecticut (-91.7 percent), Nebraska (-90 percent), Michigan (-57.9 percent), Alabama (-57.3 percent), North Dakota (-56.3 percent), Idaho (-51.6 percent), Minnesota (-48 percent), Washington (-45.3 percent), Oregon (-44.4 percent), Wyoming (-42.4 percent), Arizona (-42.2 percent), Ohio (-41.9 percent), New Hampshire (-37.5 percent), Indiana (-36 percent), Louisiana (-35.5 percent), Utah (-34.8 percent), Illinois (-31.9 percent), Wisconsin (-27.3 percent), Texas (-18.8 percent), Georgia (-18.6 percent), New York (-17.8 percent), Maine (-16.7 percent), Pennsylvania (-15.3 percent), California (-14.3 percent), New Mexico (-10.1 percent), Oklahoma (-7.5 percent) and North Carolina (-4.8 percent).

Total floors shipped in November were 6,318, down 20.4 percent from November 2008. The number of reporting plants for November was 156, unchanged from October 2009. The number of corporations was 61, also unchanged from October. More details will be forthcoming in MHI’s Monthly Economic Report for November.
