New York Unions Torched Over Proposed Modular Steel Tower

Following up on a post from March 17, Bed-StyPatch.com reports that New York City unions are infuriated over developer Forest City Ratner’s plan for a steel modular building in Brooklyn’s Atlantic Yards.  The company says modular construction could cut their costs in half for the 34-story project, the tallest modular structure of its kind, but that they are still committed to union labor.  Edward Walsh, president of the New York District Council of Ironworkers, said, “We believe the time-tested ground up erected steel frame provides for far greater safety than the proposed untested prefab option at 34 stories.”  A nearby modular housing company says some workers prefer the consistency of indoor work building homes over the construction site, and their employees are union.
