MHMSM.com Asks Santa Monica to Rename Community

After reporting on a welcomed effort to upgrade the homes in a city-owned manufactured housing community, MHMSM.com wrote to the city suggesting a name upgrade may also be in order. The letter to Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom reads:

“I was delighted to read recently in Lookout News that the Santa Monica City Council approved new funding to help residents of Santa Monica’s Mountain View Mobile Home Park upgrade to new manufactured homes. In light of that and because the community is a city-owned entity, I would like to suggest the city upgrade the name of the community.

“As you may be aware, the term ‘mobile home’ refers to homes built before the adoption of the HUD Code on June 15, 1976. Homes built after that date are properly referred to as ‘manufactured homes.’ The industry is also encouraging use of the word ‘community’ rather than ‘park,’ to emphasize the reality that this is a place where people live, rather than a transient place to keep a moveable home. The words ‘mobile’ and ‘park’ both stem from the early days of the recreation vehicle industry and do not accurately reflect the homes or industry today.”
