Manufactured Housing Debated at Iowa State University

In a discussion at the school’s College of Design, a reporter for the Des Moines Register brought up the dilemma of some low income families buying sub-standard, older homes because they cannot afford to live elsewhere, having no recourse if the community owner does not respond to problems, and being evicted if they cannot afford to relocate. As reported in the Feb. 10 Iowa State Daily, the issue of corporate speculators buying small communities without having to face residents was also raised, and that perhaps legislation needs to be enacted to protect home owners. One owner of a 31 home community responded by saying he’s never made money from an eviction, and that it has more to do with the cost of living and individual situations, which legislation cannot address.
