Manufactured Housing Consensus Committee Considers Proposed Regulation on Recreation Vehicles and Park Trailers

On March 23, the Manufactured Housing Consensus Committee (MHCC) held a conference call to comment on and recommend modifications to a proposed change to the HUD procedural and enforcement regulations (24CFR 3282.8(g) regarding the definition of a recreational vehicle (RV) and park trailer.

The MHCC suggested that HUD adopt a definition of recreational vehicle and park trailer which would not be subject to the Manufactured Housing Construction and Safety Standards.

The new proposal would maintain the current definition of a recreational vehicle (RV) with a few minor changes, and provides for a new definition of park trailer.

A park trailer would be defined as a unit designed and marketed primarily as temporary living quarters for recreational or seasonal use; 400 square feet or less, including when erected on site; and not designed to accept additional structures, add-ons or other additions that would increase the size.

The MHCC rejected proposals to eliminate the 400 square foot size limit from the definition of a recreational vehicle. A copy of the proposed language adopted by the MHCC was not available at press time.
