Strong History of Manufactured Homes in Montana

Factory-built and man-made portable homes have been in Montana for hundreds of years, from early settlers who followed the mining and timber industries from site to site, to modern day residents who want a house on their own piece of land, according to Zoe Anne Stoltz with the Montana Historical Society. According to beartoothnbc.com, she says in Lewis and Clark County alone 12 percent of the population has lived in a manufactured home since the 1980’s. Noting manufactured homes got wider as roads became smoother and wider, Stoltz says, “As long as we are going from construction site to construction, as long as we’re looking for a quick home to put on those 5 acres, we are going to want manufactured homes.” MHProNews has learned Stoltz thinks of people who live in manufactured homes as adding diversity to the culture.
