The modular, as the article points out, has been the “net big thing” in home building for a century or more, yet accounted for only about five percent of new home built in 2010. The revolution, however, may have at last arrived, thanks in part to urban residential growth and new applications for modular construction there. The sustainability factor is another reason. As Living Green points out, almost nothing used in modular construction facility goes to waste. Moreover, they cost less to produce and many manufacturers use the cost savings to invest in energy-efficient upgrades including solar panels.
