SourceMedia Group News reports from Iowa that Senate bill 252 has been defeated 23-25. This bill was designed to protect manufactured homeowners from predatory lenders, and give residents rights equivalent to those of apartment dwellers. But according to Joe Kelly, Exec. VP of the Iowa Manufactured Housing Association (IMHA), it also contained amendments that could not be supported by the Association. “We are willing to support some changes to the law that are helpful to residents, but are not detrimental owners/managers who run good operations,” says Kelly. MHMSM.com will continue to follow this story.

Matt,nnPlease do not repeat the misinformation campaign Lee Rood of the Des Moines Register was waging against our housing. Here is the truth–Residents of manufactured homes have right greater than those of apartment residents in Iowa. Termination of a lease for apartment owners requires a 30 day notice, termination of a lease for manufactured housing residents requires a 60 day notice. Both apartment and manufactured housing residents and landlords have a no cause provision for termination of a lease. Lee Rood ran a Jerry Springer series on manufactured housing that was often inaccurate and too often contained outright lies, that she knew to be falsehoods. Because our brand image is lower than a snakes’s belly in a wagon wheel rut we are easy targets for journalists of the ilk of Ms. Rood. We need to address our brand image.
