House Financial Committee Leadership Set, Committee Size Shrinks

On December 9, incoming House Financial Services Chairman Spencer Bachus (R-AL) announced his appointments for subcommittee leadership positions in the 112th Congress. The HFSC plays a critical role in overseeing the manufactured and modular housing industries. Those selected for leadership posts include:

  • Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Vice Chairman, Financial Services Committee
  • Rep. Judy Biggert (R-IL), Chairman, Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity/Jurisdiction: Insurance generally, housing, urban development, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
  • Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Chairwoman, Financial Institutions Subcommittee and Consumer Credit/Jurisdiction: Banks and banking, depository institutions, federal deposit insurance, and safety and soundness.
  • Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), Chairman, Capital Markets and Government-Sponsored Enterprises Subcommittee/Jurisdiction: Capital markets, securities, and government sponsored enterprises.
  • Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), Chairman, Domestic Monetary Policy Subcommittee/Jurisdiction: Domestic monetary policy, currency, precious metals, valuation of the dollar, economic stabilization, defense production, commodity prices, financial aid to commerce and industry.
  • Rep. Gary Miller (R-CA), Chairman, International Monetary Policy Subcommittee/Jurisdiction: International monetary policy, international finance and banking, international financial and monetary organizations, including the IMF and World Bank, and the promotion of international trade in financial services.
  • Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX), Chairman, Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee/Jurisdiction: Oversight of all matters within the jurisdiction of the full Committee.

Current Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) will retain his status as lead Democrat on the panel when the 112th Congress convenes in January.

It is has been reported that the overall size of the panel is expected to shrink from its current size of 71 members (42D, 29R) to 59 members (33R, 26D) in 112th Congress. 13 new GOP members are expected to join the committee, which initial reports indicate to be Reps. Quico Canseco (R-TX), Robert Dold (R-IL), Sean Duffy (R-WI), Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Michael Grimm (R-NY), Nan Hayworth (R-NY),Bill Huizenga (R-MI), Randy Hultgren (R-IL), Robert Hurt (R-VA), Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO), Steve Pearce (R-NM), Steve Stivers (R-OH) and Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA).

While House Democrats are expected to finalize the full list of committee ranking members the week of December 13, the House Democratic Caucus did approve four key ranking members positions for the 112th Congress on December 9, including:

  • Appropriations: Norm Dicks (D-WA)
  • Energy & Commerce: Henry Waxman (D-CA)
  • Financial Services: Barney Frank (D-MA)
  • Ways & Means: Sander Levin (D-MI)
