Board Approves Larger MH

The UpperMacungiePatch says the Upper Macungie Township Zoning Board in southeast Pennsylvania voted to approve variances allowing a larger manufactured home to replace a smaller one. The current pre-HUD Code home measures 12 feet by 60 feet. MHProNews.com has learned the new multi-section is 27 feet four inches by 60 feet. Stephen Souders of Discovery Homes in Kutztown, near Reading, spoke on behalf of the owner at the hearing. He said the original home had been there since 1973.

  1. I think this is one place the manufactured housing market may have dropped the ball.  I attended one town hall meeting where an individual wanted to replace a home with a MOD. The town had an ordinance against new manufactured housing, the mayor who was running the meeting said he didn’t know about Modular’s but if it came with wheels on it it’s a trailer.  It was reported to me that a past Attorney General of the State said the same thing.  Most people are not aware of the strides the industry has made or the differences in manufacture and modular.  I have even had trouble getting building permits for customers when we supplied the engineer’s specs on the Mod.  I have run into lenders, attorneys, and inspectors that have no clue of the difference and I don’t believe this is just a local problem from what I hear.
