Writing in the NationalMortgageNews, Paul Muolo says Mitt Romney has pledged to get rid of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which likely would also dismantle the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). “It’s election season….and cutting big government is a red meat move,” writes Muolo. It would have to pass Congress, but he notes, “…if you think the housing market is tough now, just wait until the FHA program disappears.”

Eliminating HUD does not automatically eliminate FHA. According to a recent broadcast by Frank Garaway and Brian Stevens, 83% of HUD’s expenditures are for entitlements. Romney is probably looking hard at that 83%.
