3,457 Manufactured Homes Shipped in February 2010, Down 2 Percent from February 2009

Arlington, VA, April 21, 2010—The Manufactured Housing Institute’s actual shipments report indicates that 3,457 new HUD-Code homes were shipped in February 2010, down 2 percent from February 2009. Shipments of single-section homes were down 4 percent, year over year, while shipments of multi-section homes were flat.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of shipments was 49,800 in February, up 12 percent from the rate of 44,300 posted in January. The SAAR corrects for normal seasonal variations in shipments and projects an annual shipments pace based on the current monthly total.

Year-over-year shipments were up in six Divisions, down in two Divisions, and flat in one Division. Shipments were up in the Middle Atlantic (53.8 percent), New England (37.5 percent), West North Central (14.4 percent), Mountain (8.9 percent), East North Central (5.7 percent) and East South Central (5.5 percent) Divisions. Shipments were down in the West South Central (-14.8 percent) and Pacific (-6.8 percent) Divisions. Shipments were flat in the South Atlantic Division.

In February 2010, shipments were up in 16 states, down in 12 states and flat in 21 states, compared to February 2009.

Shipments were up in Nebraska (400 percent), North Dakota (250 percent), Wisconsin (216.7 percent), Wyoming (100 percent), Ohio (94.7 percent), South Dakota (87.5 percent), New York (79.2 percent), Virginia (64.5 percent), Delaware (54.5 percent), Pennsylvania (53.2 percent), Tennessee (52.5 percent), South Carolina (39.5 percent), Kansas (31.8 percent), New Mexico (30.1 percent), Florida (25.3 percent), and Oklahoma (8.7 percent).

Shipments were down in North Carolina (-7.0 percent), Alabama (-10.4 percent), California (-14.0 percent), Missouri (-16 percent), Arkansas (-24.6 percent), Michigan (-25 percent), West Virginia (-27.3 percent), Indiana (-32.5 percent), Louisiana (-36.1 percent), Utah (-53.8 percent), Minnesota (-64 percent), and Maryland (-88.7 percent).

Shipments were flat in Massachusetts, Vermont, Iowa, Connecticut, Maine, Idaho, Alaska, Texas, Illinois, Washington, Kentucky, Oregon, Arizona, Mississippi, Georgia, Colorado, Nevada, New Jersey, Montana, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

Total floors shipped in February were 5,616, down one percent from February 2009. The number of reporting plants for February was 138, up 2 from January 2010. The number of reporting corporations was 58, up 4 from January. More details will be forthcoming in MHI’s Monthly Economic Report for February.
