3,158 Manufactured Homes Shipped in January 2010, Down 17.4 Percent from January 2009

Arlington, VA, March 11, 2010-The Manufactured Housing Institute’s actual shipments report indicates that 3,158 new HUD-Code homes were shipped in January 2010, down 17.4 percent from January 2009. Shipments of single-section homes were down 28.7 percent, year over year, while shipments of multi-section homes were down 8.8 percent.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of shipments was 44,300 in January, down 17 percent from the rate of 53,300 posted in December. The SAAR corrects for normal seasonal variations in shipments and projects an annual shipments pace based on the current monthly total.

Year-over-year shipments were up in two Divisions and down in seven Divisions. Shipments were up in the New England (42.9 percent) and Middle Atlantic (16.1 percent) Divisions. Shipments were down in the East South Central (-35.4 percent), East North Central (-30 percent), Mountain (-24.1 percent), Pacific (-21.7 percent), West North Central (-13.1 percent), West South Central (-8.4 percent) and South Atlantic (-4.5 percent) Divisions.

In January 2010, shipments were up in 11 states down in 19 states and flat in 19 states, compared to January 2009. Shipments were up in North Dakota (133.3 percent), Maine (80 percent), Kentucky (52.7 percent), Tennessee (34.7 percent), New York (30.2 percent), Arkansas (19.1 percent), Illinois (18.2 percent), South Carolina (15.8 percent), Pennsylvania (9.5 percent), Oklahoma (4.9 percent) and Texas (4.4 percent). Shipments were flat in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Nebraska, Nevada, South Dakota, Indiana, Oregon, Florida, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Minnesota, Maryland, Colorado, Vermont, Idaho, Iowa, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Alaska.

Shipments were down in Michigan (-77.8 percent), Alabama (-76.6 percent), Montana (-66.7 percent), Kansas (-59.3 percent), Utah (-56.3 percent), Delaware (-56.3 percent), Ohio (-53.1 percent), Wyoming (-37.5 percent), Louisiana (-35.8 percent), Washington (-33.3 percent), New Mexico (-29.8 percent), California (-23.3 percent), Missouri (-16.7 percent), Georgia (-13.6 percent), West Virginia (-12.3 percent), Arizona (-11.6 percent), Mississippi (-7.4 percent), North Carolina (-5.8 percent) and Virginia (-5.1 percent).

Total floors shipped in January were 5,205, down 14.2 percent from January 2009. The number of reporting plants for January was 136, down 20 from December 2010.
