Feeling vs. Thinking

We humans are beings who both feel and think. While thinking is respected in many circles, emotions are what entertainers, marketing, sales professionals, politicos, the media and so many others often target.

We have both emotion and reason, because we should use both.

Successful professionals learn to manage both emotions and sound reason.

Here are some thoughts on the subject.

"When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudice and motivated by pride and vanity."

– Dale Carnagie

"Against logic there is no armor like ignorance."

– Laurence J. Peter

"We especially need imagination in science. It is not all mathematics, nor all logic, but it is somewhat beauty and poetry."

– Maria Montessori

"I use emotion for the many and reserve reason for the few."

– Adolf Hitler

"Sometimes in life one experiences an emotion which is so strong that it is difficult to think, or to reason."

– Eric Cantona

It isn't what we don't know that gives us trouble, it's what we know that ain't so."

– Will Rogers

"Emotions have taught mankind to reason."

No Surrender! The Burning Heart, Survivor

You couldn't tell from my love of the Rocky movie series that my interest in boxing is near zero. Rocky is not so much about boxing, as it is about what it takes to overcome; what it takes to achieve success and victory even against long odds.

Consider the lyrics to this song, supplied by the same person who did the montage for the video above.

While all of it is powerful, Survivor's lyrics in the third paragraph below are particularly packed with meaning. Ponder, enjoy, then just do it.

Burning heart

Two worlds collide, rival nations
It's a primitive clash, venting years of frustrations
Bravely we hope against all hope, there is so much at stake
Seems our freedom's up against the ropes
Does the crowd understand?
Is it a East vs. West, or man against man
Can any nation stand alone?

In the burning heart, just about to burst
There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst
In the darkest night, rising like a spire
In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire, in the burning heart

In the warrior's code, there's no surrender
Though his body says stop, his spirit cries never
Deep in our soul a quiet ember
Knows it's you against you
the paradox that drives us on
It's a battle of wills, in the heat of attack
It's the passion that kills
The victory is yours alone

In the burning heart, just about to burst
There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst
In the darkest night, rising like a spire
In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire

In the burning heart, just about to burst
There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst
In the darkest night, rising like a spire
In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire

In the burning heart, just about to burst
There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst
In the darkest night, rising like a spire
In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire
In the burning heart.

Mickey Mantle…”It’s Unbelievable!”

how-much-you-don't-know-inspiration-blog-mhpronews-com-inspiration-blog

Without a healthy dose of humility, we can not grow. What baseball legend Mickey Mantle's quote above suggests is that you don't know what you don't know.

"During my 18 years I came to bat almost 10,000 times. I struck out about 1,700 times and walked maybe 1,800 times. You figure a ballplayer will average about 500 at-bats a season. That means I played 7 years without ever hitting the ball." – Mickey Mantle.

"Sometimes I think if I had the same body and the same natural ability and someone else's brain, who knows how good a player I might have been." – Mickey Mantle.

Stop and think. Mantle, one of the great baseball players of all time, saying how much he didn't know. Mantle, admitting he could have learned more.

Those who think they know it all put themselves at a disadvantage. Ego checked, willing to learn and apply new ideas, we can grow. ##

All too often, we've all seen those who gave up too easily. Maybe we have done so ourselves. These two Vince Lombardi quotes reminds us to set high goals, and to then have the determination to go for the grand prize of success.

"Winners never quit and quitters never win."

Vince Lombardi

"Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence."

The Greatest Generation

The World War II era is often called 'the greatest generation.' It is a big tip of the hat to those vets, but it is also a tip of the hat to those who worked in the factories, farms, transport and recycling centers that made what happened on the front lines possible.

we-can-do-it-world-war-2-poster-archives-gov-posted-manufactured-housing-pro-news-mhpronews-.gif

Listening to an interview on the radio of an author who has just published a book on the topic, the writer interviewed a number of those WWII vets and their families. Among his observations, was that here was a generation that wasn't asking for special recognition or accolades for what they did. They simply did what they had to do. Once the job was done, those who lived and could, went back to their every day lives.

together-we-win-ww2-wikicommons-posted-manufactured-housing-pro-news-mhpronew-com-

Minutes after listening to the interview of the author, we pulled up to a shopping center and as we walked by a store, we saw this World War II vet in the framed photo below. He drove the modest car seen below the framed image we created of his photo.

greatest-generations-vet-car-posted-manufactured-housing-pro-news-mhpronews- (1)

Note the 'God bless America' flag on the side of the
WWII vet's (shown in the framed photo above) car.

Just as the author on the radio said, this vet spoke not a word when I asked him for his photo. He simply turned and gently, unassumingly smiled. He posed for the photo as requested. I thanked him, and he went on into the store.

In saying they were the greatest generation (the author said, 'they literally saved the world' from what would have happened if the Nazi's and Japanese had won the war) this should inspire our generation and all others! Their praise is not to take away from what the vets or citizens who followed did.

Like a record in sports, business or any other field, their record should inspire others to follow their example.

When I think about hardship today, vs what hardship looked like during the great depression, there is no doubt that most are far better off in material terms today than then. What we ought to ask ourselves is, are we better off in terms of the spirit and motivation that drives people to do and give their best daily?

Let the heroes of the past and present inspire you and yours to be and give your best! ##
