{"id":756,"date":"2011-04-22T01:17:18","date_gmt":"2011-04-22T06:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/wordsofwisdom\/?p=756"},"modified":"2011-04-22T01:17:18","modified_gmt":"2011-04-22T06:17:18","slug":"do-you-look-in-the-mirror-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/wordsofwisdom\/do-you-look-in-the-mirror-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"Do you look in the mirror enough?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cNever be afraid to sit awhile and think.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>~Lorraine Hansbury<\/p>\n<p>In the above statement, I\u2019m not referring here to checking that your hair is in place or that your makeup is applied correctly or that your sideburns are straight or your mustache is properly trimmed. I\u2019m asking you as a manager are you spending enough time in self-evaluation or are you too busy, arrogant, ego centered or not concerned with how you may be contributing to the possible causes of some of your organization\u2019s or department\u2019s challenges.\u00a0 Too many managers are quick to look outside themselves for the causes of their problems.\u00a0 I\u2019m here to tell you, that if you will spend more time looking in the mirror you may be surprised at how or why some of your issues are not being properly dealt with.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite sayings that I share with my management audiences is; if you have a problem in your organization look up the ladder for the cause and down the ladder for the solution.\u00a0 Most managers reverse this approach and unfortunately because they do, they never seem to be able to solve many of their challenges in an effective way, once and for all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Everything that happens in your department or organization happens because you either tolerate it or contribute to it as a result of your management style, communication patterns or ego.\u00a0 So if you really want to solve some of your organization\u2019s current and future problems, look in the mirror before you go ranting and raving throughout your department pointing a finger and looking for causes or someone to blame.<\/p>\n<p>Why won\u2019t managers look in the mirror more often?\u00a0 Here are a few simple reasons.<\/p>\n<p>-They are insecure and need to be right and can\u2019t make mistakes.\u00a0 So they will defend decisions even if they are poor ones or even wrong ones.<\/p>\n<p>-Their ego is out of control.\u00a0 They need to have total control over everything; decisions, policies, procedures, etc.<\/p>\n<p>-They are too wrapped up in their own agendas, needs or personal objectives.<\/p>\n<p>-They say they are too busy and don\u2019t have time.\u00a0 Well, maybe they don\u2019t have time because they are wasting so much time in micro-management or crisis-management.<\/p>\n<p>-They are in a state of apathy where they are unaware of the realities of what\u2019s going on in their organization.<\/p>\n<p>-They are sort of in la-la land without a care in the world.<\/p>\n<p>-They are in denial.\u00a0 They refuse to admit that a problem exists or that they are contributing to it.<\/p>\n<p>-They have low self-esteem or a poor self-image and can\u2019t bring themselves to see how anything they are doing or not doing could be a contributor.<\/p>\n<p>-They just don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n<p>There are others but I\u2019ll bet if you or one of your managers has this problem that it is being caused by one or more of the above.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s the answer?\u00a0 Look in the mirror more often and start asking yourself the tough questions.\u00a0 Can\u2019t bring yourself to do it?\u00a0 Call me, I\u2019ll help you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In His service, Tim<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cNever be afraid to sit awhile and think.\u201d ~Lorraine Hansbury In the above statement, I\u2019m not referring here to checking that your hair is in place or that your makeup is applied correctly or that your sideburns are straight or your mustache is properly trimmed.
