I don&#8217;t really know whether it is true or not.  Many old clich&eacute;s have a way of hanging around for years and people seldom question them.  Point is, first impressions do matter especially in business.<\/p>\n<p>In your personal life if you make a poor first impression on a new friend or member of the opposite sex it probably won&#8217;t cost you your job or suddenly put you in the ranks of the unemployed.  However, a consistent poor first impression in business can create a stigma that can be hard to shake.<\/p>\n<p>Why are first impressions so important?  When we first meet someone we judge them (right or wrong) on a number of factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>their physical appearance<\/li>\n<li>how they are dressed<\/li>\n<li>their posture<\/li>\n<li>their confidence<\/li>\n<li>their ability to communicate (speak articulately and listen actively)<\/li>\n<li>their social graces<\/li>\n<li>are they friendly<\/li>\n<li>their smile<\/li>\n<li>the non-verbal gestures they send (positive, negative, congruent)<\/li>\n<li>their eye contact<\/li>\n<li>what they resonate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People then filter all of the above items through their own unique perceptual mental filter and come to some conclusions: (these are not right or wrong, accurate or inaccurate just the way the other person interprets what they see or hear.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I like this person<\/li>\n<li>I don&#8217;t like this person.<\/li>\n<li>I respect this person<\/li>\n<li>I don&#8217;t respect this person<\/li>\n<li>I trust this person<\/li>\n<li>I don&#8217;t trust this person<\/li>\n<li>I accept this person at face value.<\/li>\n<li>I sense some underlying hidden agendas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are some of the contributors to a positive or favorable first impression?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a genuine smile<\/li>\n<li>a firm handshake<\/li>\n<li>confident, open body language<\/li>\n<li>good erect posture<\/li>\n<li>eye contact, but not staring<\/li>\n<li>the ability and willingness to listen<\/li>\n<li>good verbal skills and vocabulary<\/li>\n<li>appropriate dress for the occasion<\/li>\n<li>good personal hygiene<\/li>\n<li>asking the other person questions about them (showing an interest)<\/li>\n<li>keeping your ego (the need to look good, manipulate or control) in check<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are some common first impression mistakes people make?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They talk too much.<\/li>\n<li>They act disinterested in the other person.<\/li>\n<li>They appear to be nervous in new social\/business settings.<\/li>\n<li>They have slumping posture.<\/li>\n<li>They lack adequate eye contact.<\/li>\n<li>They don&#8217;t listen.<\/li>\n<li>They have a &#8216;fish-like, limp, un-inspiring&#8217; handshake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What type of first impressions do you make on new prospects?<\/p>\n<p>Make Some Memories Every Day&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is an old saying &#8211; &#8216;you never get a second chance to make a first impression&#8217;.
