{"id":532,"date":"2010-06-20T20:37:13","date_gmt":"2010-06-21T01:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/tonykovach\/?p=532"},"modified":"2010-06-21T03:16:26","modified_gmt":"2010-06-21T08:16:26","slug":"tired-of-media-bias-against-manufactured-housing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/tired-of-media-bias-against-manufactured-housing\/","title":{"rendered":"Tired of Media Bias against Manufactured Housing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ignorance isn\u2019t a crime.\u00a0 By definition, <strong>ignorance means<\/strong> an <strong>\u201cabsence of knowledge.\u201d<\/strong> But there are two general types of ignorance.\u00a0 One is<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>involuntary<\/strong>,<\/em> and the other is <em><strong>voluntary<\/strong>.<\/em> If someone\u2019s ignorance about a subject is caused by a lack of desire or motivation to know the truth; that is <em>voluntary ignorance<\/em>.\u00a0 Voluntary ignorance may not be a crime, but it may reflect apathy, bias, prejudice or worse.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve been in the manufactured housing industry for more than a few months, odds are you have already experienced media ignorance or actual bias against manufactured housing.<\/p><div id=\"manuf-816095421\" class=\"manuf-content manuf-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3870480136270376\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3870480136270376\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>This ignorance or bias against manufactured housing often manifests itself around \u2018tornado season,\u2019 but certainly isn\u2019t limited to those destructive events.\u00a0 An industry buddy of mine has said he sometimes wonders where the greater wind exists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>among      biased\/ignorant media figures bemoaning manufactured housing\u2019s      \u2018endangered\u2019 residents,<\/li>\n<li>or a      tornado\u2019s winds itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My retort is that while some in the media are indeed ignorant or negatively biased against manufactured homes, my own experience is that an editor or reporter who is respectfully approached is typically open to reason.\u00a0 Most in the media want to \u2018get the story right.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So over the years, I\u2019ve had a number of occasions where I have contacted a local news reporter or editor, and discussed a topic that I thought was improperly handled by their news outlet.\u00a0 The vast majority of the time, these editors and journalists responded in kind, listened to the facts as I presented them, and thanked me.\u00a0 Most mainstream media pros typically approach the end of the call or conversation by asking, <em>\u2018okay, what would you like to see us do?\u2019 <\/em>My standard reply to that welcome question is two fold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8216;Please consider me a resource<\/strong>&#8216; on any news story that involves manufactured or factory built housing.\u00a0 Then, I make sure that they have my contact information, especially my phone numbers.<\/li>\n<li>In the case of print journalists, I ask them to let me <strong>do a guest editorial column<\/strong> to share the other perspective. family or friend talked that person out of it due to the<em> \u2018danger\u2019 of living in a tr__l_r house\u2019<\/em> or a<em> \u2018mobile home.\u2019 <\/em> It has been 34 years since the HUD Code has gone into effect and we are still dealing with that type of bias?<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, yes.\u00a0 Public ignorance on such nuanced details as the difference between mobile homes and manufactured housing can be as widespread as among many in the media;
