Uri Berliner served <em>NPR<\/em> for over decades, including as a senior business editor. Berliner&#8217;s politics are self-described as left-leaning who in his words: &#8220;I fit the NPR mold.&#8221; But Berliner recently authored an op-ed via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/we-are-a-cancer-and-there-is-no-cure-msnbc-producer-ariana-pekary-quits-rips-them-flawed-news-industry-practices-by-left-right-media-names-fox-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bari Weiss<\/a> led <em>Free Press<\/em> media platform. That <em>Free Press<\/em> op-ed headline said: &#8220;I\u2019ve Been at NPR for 25 Years. Here\u2019s How We Lost America\u2019s Trust.&#8221; The subheading said: &#8220;Uri Berliner, a veteran at the public radio institution, says the network lost its way when it started telling listeners how to think.&#8221; Not long after that op-ed kicked up a firestorm, Berliner was suspended. One would presume that CEO Maher was involved in that decision on Berliner. NPR has periodically reported on manufactured housing related topics, as have others in mainstream media. NPR is thus a useful specific case study for understanding modern media and its role in modern American society. He is also the author of the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/War-History-Conspiracy-Rewrite-Americas\/dp\/1621578097\">&#8220;The War on History: The Conspiracy to Rewrite America&#8217;s Past.&#8221;<\/a> <a href=\"mailto:jarrett.stepman@dailysignal.com\">Send an email to Jarrett<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a week since a liberal, 25-year veteran editor for National Public Radio published a damning online essay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2024\/04\/09\/npr-whistleblower-shreds-left-wing-publicly-funded-radio-network\/\">about the network\u2019s biased, left-wing coverage<\/a>, and there appears to have been no self-reflection by NPR\u2019s powers that be.<\/p>\n<p>Uri Berliner, who authored the essay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2024\/04\/17\/npr-star-lamely-swats-their-suspended-dissident\/\">was chastised by NPR employees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2024\/04\/16\/npr-suspends-uri-berliner-who-blew-whistle-outlets-bias\/\">suspended<\/a>, and finally submitted his resignation Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t say I\u2019m surprised.<\/p>\n<p>With apologies to Berliner, who said that he\u2019d rather see the taxpayer-subsidized network reform itself and get back to serving the broader public, rather than be defunded, he hasn\u2019t quite come to grips with the depth of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>The West\u2019s compromised and radical institutions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/12\/28\/its-up-to-the-american-people-to-fix-higher-education\/\">won\u2019t reform willingly<\/a>. They are part of a tightly knit, self-reinforcing system that uniformly rewards left-wing ideology and punishes even mild dissent.<\/p>\n<p>If you want a look at where NPR is headed, just take a look at the social media posts of the network\u2019s new CEO, Katherine Maher, who took over at the helm in January.<\/p>\n<p>Old media posts and media appearances paint an almost ludicrously predictable picture of what NPR has become. The portrait they create is of a woman who seems more like an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2024\/03\/01\/woke-gemini-ai-demonstrates-threat-big-tech-information-gatekeepers\/\">AI bot crafted by Google employees<\/a>, rather than a real person.<\/p>\n<p>She has backed every left-wing cause, cheered every Democratic presidential candidate with pom-poms, and riffed on the news with every kind of woke inanity you can think of.<\/p>\n<p>Follow journalist Christopher Rufo on X for the latest: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realchrisrufo\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/realchrisrufo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the more noteworthy reveals.<\/p>\n<p>This is what she said about \u201ctruth\u201d at a 2022 TED Talk, when she was the CEO of Wikimedia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur reverence for the truth might be a distraction that is getting in the way of finding common ground and getting things done,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2024\/04\/17\/npr_ceo_katherine_maher_a_reverence_for_the_truth_might_be_getting_in_the_way_of_getting_things_done.html\">she said<\/a>. \u201cThat is not to say that the truth doesn\u2019t exist or to say that the truth isn\u2019t important. Clearly, the search for the truth has led us to do great things \u2026 [but] one reason we have such glorious chronicles to the human experience and all forms of culture is because we acknowledge there are many different truths.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Here&#8217;s the new NPR CEO Katherine Maher (and former chief executive of Wikipedia) explaining that &#8220;the truth&#8221; is an outdated concept.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone can have their own truth:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LyUGXSBI8g\">pic.twitter.com\/LyUGXSBI8g<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 End Wokeness (@EndWokeness) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EndWokeness\/status\/1780580866646851842?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 17, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Maher is all aboard the relativistic \u201cmy truth\u201d train. She said she cracked down on the \u201cfree and open\u201d ethos at Wikipedia because it was too often based on a \u201cwhite male, Westernized construct\u201d that led to \u201cexclusion of communities and languages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise then that she\u2019s not a huge fan of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/npr-boss-called-first-amendment-challenge-reverence-truth-distraction\">problematic First Amendment<\/a>, which she saw as the \u201cNo. 1 challenge\u201d to combating what she called \u201cdisinformation and misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she coordinated with the government to suppress content related to COVID-19 and the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>As a quick reminder to our nation\u2019s cultural elites like Maher: The First Amendment was designed to protect free speech, not because all speech is good, but because it was the best way to protect the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Why does the head of a major media organization seem to have a problem with a constitutional amendment protecting the free press?<\/p>\n<p>The problem at NPR isn\u2019t just the woman in charge.<\/p>\n<p>If anything, it seems like the most empowered employees want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/50-npr-employees-demand-ceo-katherine-maher-editor-chief-publicly-rebuke-factual-inaccuracies\">do more to smash dissent<\/a> and control the narrative. Are these employees in the majority? Who knows, but given how quickly Berliner was purged, it doesn\u2019t take a lot to surmise that people like him aren\u2019t going to be listened to behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<p>So, what can be done to fix NPR? I\u2019d suggest that asking for the network to fire Maher might be satisfying, but won\u2019t ultimately solve the underlying problem.<\/p>\n<p>If NPR were to fire her, she would likely just be replaced by another AI chatbot with similar, but perhaps slightly stealthier opinions.<\/p>\n<p>Many on the Left believe\u2014correctly\u2014that their position within America\u2019s most elite institutions is unassailable. Speaking the generic, DEI-laden language of the institutions is how one makes it to the top in the institutional rat race.<\/p>\n<p>This is why the nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/11\/opinion\/private-k-12-programs-ditch-classics-for-race-obsessed-classes-woke-activism\/\">most elite private high schools<\/a> are often even more absurdly left-wing than public schools. They know that the path to success doesn\u2019t just come from grades, or accomplishments, or genuine merit. Instead, it comes from a combination of immutable and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-health-and-wellness\/dr-rachel-levine-becomes-nations-first-transgender-four-star-officer-rcna3283\">select mutable personal characteristics<\/a> and from relentlessly being on the right side of the \u201cnarrative\u201d at all times.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how revolutionary regimes often operate, whether it be France in the late 18th century or the Soviet Union in the early 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>Maher played that game flawlessly, which is why today she is NPR\u2019s CEO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new CEO of NPR is part of a rising cohort of affluent, left-wing, female managers who dominate HR and DEI,\u201d Rufo wrote for City Journal. \u201c\u2026 They value safety over liberty, censorship over debate, and relativism over truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In some rare cases, somebody different rises to the top and is willing to defy institutional left-wing gatekeepers. That\u2019s the Elon Musk model and why his takeover of Twitter, now X, was such a big deal.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s unlikely to happen with NPR, as it\u2019s more directly connected to higher education and the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>The only way forward for positive \u201cchange\u201d at NPR is to not only pull the plug on the network\u2019s direct funding, but also to cut off the flow of grant money that has floated many of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/04\/11\/npr-peddles-propaganda-for-the-regime-its-past-time-to-pull-its-funding\/\">most ridiculous programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the hundreds of millions of dollars Congress appropriates to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a significant amount is appropriated to local NPR affiliates through grants.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe if NPR is totally defunded and forced to operate on its own, the network will have to finally reckon with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insideradio.com\/free\/while-listenership-has-declined-public-radio-news-remains-financially-stable\/article_8f03b8ec-31c4-11ee-ae31-c32daa37ce21.html\">its narrow, shrunken audience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BREAKING: Rep. For years, <em>MHProNews<\/em> has provided a link and\/or a variation of the graphic like the revised one below for some years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/LeftRightCenterMediaBiasSharylAttkissonAllSidesWikipediaMSN-BingCopilotBiasRatingCitedByMHProNewsUpdated2.25.2024-scaled.jpg\" width=\"617\" height=\"2382\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>MHProNews<\/em> has been quite clear that there are often valid insights from sources that span the left-right divide. For instance, antitrust issues may be more pronounced in some cases from left-leaning sources.\u00a0 That noted, there are certainly concerns that should be explored about left-leaning (or, for that matter, right-leaning) sources that may engage in paltering, posturing, or providing their readers\/viewers\/listeners with noble sounding platitudes that don&#8217;t stand up to
