In 2021 Sunshine Homes celebrated its 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary. \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Sunshine Homes has been building quality homes since 1971. Our mission is to build manufactured homes and modular homes with quality, style, and value to meet the evolving needs of today\u2019s hardworking families. We are a family-owned, debt-free, and financially sound company. As a personal note, I sold Sunshine Homes in the early 1980s on South Shields Blvd in Oklahoma City\u2019s once robust \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>mobile home row<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d Among the models that come to mind was an attractive 2+1 Front Kitchen floorplan. The exterior siding was attractive. The kitchen had a unique breakfast booth. If memory serves, it was a 14&#215;64\u2019 and was a good seller. Unlike some models (then or now), that model had a guest coat closet and was eye-appealing inside and out. Then and now, Sunshine earned a reputation for properly servicing what they sell, which sadly not all factory-builders can make the same claim without crossing their fingers behind their back.<\/p>\n<p>So, for a variety of reasons, a Sunshine was a manufactured home that was a pleasure to sell, and they were and remain good people to do business with.<\/p>\n<p>Among their more recent promos are the following.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>You Have Not Seen a Manufactured Home Like This &#8211; Sunshine Homes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IZsffV6Nets\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b>They think it is a stick-built\u00a0house<\/b><\/span><\/span>\u201d instead of being a \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>manufactured home<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d It should be obvious that a favorable comparison of a Sunshine Home to conventional (a.k.a. &#8216;site built&#8217; or &#8216;stick-built&#8217;) homes is widely perceived to be a plus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TLu3v0IZnJo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Bostick and More on Sunshine Homes <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is no secret that John Bostick, the longtime leader of the firm has periodically served as Chairman for the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) for years.<\/p>\n<p>In my view, an evidence-based case could be made that Bostick was a good spokesperson for the industry at large, and for manufactured home independents.<\/p>\n<p>Bostick in the Berkshire era of Manufactured Housing has favored robust industry growth and has periodically called for a group effort to step up and publicly act. Fast forward from this 2000-year data point to now, and all but one of the top 10 producers shown has been acquired and\/or merged by a larger firm. Cavco is the exception, and Cavco had a sizable injection of outside cash when they began their run for Mergers and Acquisitions (M&amp;A). Bostick has reportedly taken a step back from day-to-day work at Sunshine. But the decades of his leadership and team building there live on.<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a useful aside, right or wrong, there are those who view MHProNews as something analogous to MHARR as MHInsider (or other mouthpieces) are to the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). That\u2019s understandable. But that notion fails the test when carefully examined.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While<em> MHProNews<\/em> does routinely publish MHARR items, <em>MHProNews<\/em> has done that from early on in our trade publishing.<\/li>\n<li><em>MHProNew<\/em>s also published MHI \u2018news and updates\u2019 for years.<\/li>\n<li><em>MHProNews<\/em> published both, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/manufactured-housing-institute\/\">only stopped publishing all that MHI produced because they had their attorney insist on it<\/a> while our parent company was still an MHI member, and while MHI was still praising our pro-industry work.<\/li>\n<li>It is in hindsight that MHI\u2019s threat\/request can now be understood as the start of a phase of MHI attempting to control the messaging about manufactured housing without an easy resource for accountability.<\/li>\n<li>Several involved in MHARR, as well as in MHI, were among those who patiently pointed out facts and evidence that pointed to MHI\u2019s apparent failure to walk their talk.<\/li>\n<li>All of this is mentioned because:<\/li>\n<li>A) its evidence based and<\/li>\n<li>B) we\u2019ve deliberately not pushed for MHARR input on this topic about Sunshine. These are my reflections, not those of anyone else.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each MHARR member is providing a uniquely important role in preserving an environment where manufactured housing independent producers can survive the various pitfalls, traps, and swindles that exist and potentially thrive. Sunshine Homes and Bostick have long been part of that proud tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Sunshine has standards which they strive to uphold. The routinely high degree of satisfaction is reflected in various interviews on- and off-camera statements made by dozens of actual Sunshine manufactured homeowners. While some of those were selected, as is often the case when video interviews of consumers are done, this writer has been to communities where Sunshine was the dominant product. This is stark contrast with experiences related by retailers for certain Big 3 producers, for example. When a manufactured home \u2018dealer\u2019 calls or emails with a complaint to MHProNews about a HUD Code producer, it is usually one of the Big Three. Is that coincidence? Is that due to market share? Or is it because there is a different mindset that exists with monopolizers\/consolidators then often exists with white hat independents?<\/p>\n<p>With those evidence- and experience-based background items, the videos and linked reports should have more meaning. Sharing these thoughts and insights should serve several purposes. Among them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inspire others to consider the takeaways from Bostick and Sunshine Homes.<\/li>\n<li>Inspire others to consider MHARR.<\/li>\n<li>Inspire others to consider doing a pro-growth, pro-consumer post-production alternative to MHI.
