Gedo\u2019s defense of Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and alleged monopolistic or illicit practices are a useful case study of debating methodologies. Let\u2019s begin by acknowledging that Gedo is willing to discuss or debate publicly. Right, wrong or in between, that willingness to debate ought to be applauded.<\/p><div id=\"manuf-333711108\" class=\"manuf-content manuf-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3870480136270376\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3870480136270376\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Who says?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The way to defeat bad ideas is by exposure, argument, and persuasion, not by trying to silence or wish them away<\/strong>.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cTruth is great and will prevail if left to herself; she is the proper and sufficient antagonist to error, and has nothing to fear from the conflicts unless by human interposition disarmed of her natural weapons, free argument and <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>debate<\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">, errors ceasing to be dangerous when it is permitted freely to contradict them<\/span>.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An \u2018antagonist\u2019 is defined as a rival, opponent, contender or an enemy. Hundreds of years before the first quote, the second one said much the same thing only in different words and more succinctly.<\/p>\n<p>What makes these two quotes from sources useful is that they come from what many would think are either side of the contemporary left-right divide. The first quote above is from modern progressives or liberals; the second bullet is from a founding father that the political right often cites, but in fairness has been cited by liberals too.<\/p>\n<p>The first bullet is part of a joint letter published on Harpers\u2019\u00a0 website, co-signed by famous writer J.K. Rowling &#8211; author of the Harry Potter fictional book series \u2013 thinker Noam Chomsky, feminist Gloria Steinem, and about 150 others in journalism, media, academia and education. Together, they sounded a joint alarm about the increased trend toward<em> silencing<\/em> or <em>punishing<\/em> critics or opponents, instead of <em>engaging with them<\/em> and exposing bad ideas through objective reason. That reasoning, they said, is accomplished through \u201c&#8230;<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>exposure, argument, and persuasion<\/strong><\/span>&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second quote is from the <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foundingfatherquotes.com\/category\/debate\">FoundingFathersQuotes<\/a><\/em><\/strong> website which says it is from \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>T<\/strong><strong>homas Jefferson: Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom, 1779 Quoted Document: A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d That website says the following. \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>This site is dedicated to those men, their quotes, their biographies, and their writings. Our goal is to preserve and share the knowledge of the Founding Fathers with current and future patriots<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That brief backdrop establishes the historic and contemporary merits of good arguments and debates. <em>MHProNews<\/em> has further previously acknowledged &#8211; and does so now again &#8211; that Gedo is an intelligent and educated professional, and that vigorous debating is a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>With that foundation and understanding, after two more quotes that flows from across the left-right divide, this article will then pivot to an analysis or \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>fisking<\/strong><\/span>\u201d &#8211; a methodical fact check &#8211; of what Gedo has said in the recent online debate about Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Acme Brick, and broader issues that relate both to our affordable housing profession but also speak to the larger national discussion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/DefineFiskFiskingDictionaryMHProNewsMasthead.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/DefineFiskFiskingDictionaryMHProNewsMasthead.png\" alt=\"DefineFiskFiskingDictionaryMHProNewsMasthead\" width=\"724\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/DefineFiskFiskingDictionaryMHProNewsMasthead.png 724w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/DefineFiskFiskingDictionaryMHProNewsMasthead-575x145.png 575w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/DefineFiskFiskingDictionaryMHProNewsMasthead-150x38.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an ironic twist, the joint letter from progressives issued in July 2020 begins by lamenting Donald J. Trump, yet as the two quotes that follow reflect, each are pointing to a similar problem. That\u2019s a time-honored method used by investigators, media, law enforcement, legislators in oversight, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buffett-led Berkshire Hathaway is a firm that Bill Gates sat on their board of directors from 2004 until March of 2020.<\/li>\n<li>The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has Warren Buffett on their board.<\/li>\n<li>The Gates Foundation and Gates\u2019 investment firm have billions in Berkshire (BRK) stock.<\/li>\n<li>Acme Brick is owned by Berkshire. Here&#8217;s my perception of your post: The fact-checking websites don&#8217;t support that &#8220;a coordinated effort existed on behalf of government entities or billionaires to place bricks on protest routes.&#8221; So your headline &#8220;&#8216;Pallets of Bricks&#8217; Investigated&#8221; could mislead a casual reader into the mistaken conclusion that the investigation was ongoing or had uncovered facts that lent credence to the belief that the bricks had been deliberately placed and that Buffet and Gates had anything whatsoever to do with it. The fact-checking sites indicate that none of these conclusions is correct. So what&#8217;s the point of your post? As we previously discussed, it&#8217;s healthy for an oligopolistic industry to have gadflies. But your posts about Buffet aren&#8217;t limited to MH industry controversies (Uncle Warren&#8217;s alleged anti-competitive behavior, for example). They focus far too often on Buffet&#8217;s (and Gates&#8217;) political beliefs or ideological perspectives, making the posts seem more like trolling than an industry blog<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In no specific order of importance, we will look at specific parts of the above and address them, which is what \u2018fisking\u2019 is &#8211; a systematic examination of claims vs. reality.<\/p>\n<p>Gedo wrote in part: \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The fact-checking sites indicate that none of these conclusions is corre<\/strong><strong>ct<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not quite accurate. Those fact check sites said the claim was \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>mostly false<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Words have meaning. \u2018Mostly false\u2019 means that it is <em><strong>somewhat true<\/strong>. <\/em>What Gedo doesn\u2019t acknowledge is that <em>MHProNews<\/em> cited 2 fact check sources, including the one that Acme Brick did. We provided an accurate look at the Berkshire-owned Acme defense. We further provided local law enforcement, local media, and White House statements relative to the issue. These made it plain that there is evidence \u2013 including photographic \u2013 that something dangerous tied in some manner to Acme is occurring. Note that the term \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>fisking<\/strong><\/span>\u201d means a detailed, or even a line by line examination, of a given statement that is being scrutinized.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>So your headline &#8220;&#8216;Pallets of Bricks&#8217; Investigated&#8221; could mislead a casual reader into the mistaken conclusion that the investigation was ongoing or had uncovered facts that lent credence to the belief that the bricks had been deliberately placed and that Buffet and Gates had anything whatsoever to do with it<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d Gedo\u2019s point is understandable, but that doesn\u2019t make it correct. <em>MHProNews <\/em>investigated the claims by investigating what others from across the spectrum have said. The headline is a phrase that some in media use to indicate a fact-check, unpacking, analysis, or other terms that mean similarly and would likewise not have been deceptive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\">The fact-checking sites indicate that none of these conclusions is correct<\/span>.\u201d <\/strong>Making a claim isn\u2019t the same as proving a claim. As was noted above did not say that. What the two fact check sites said that is that the claim is \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>mostly false<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d Just because some have made allegations that are in some sense incorrect doesn\u2019t mean that some of the allegations are accurate and\/or merit more investigation. \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Mostly false<\/strong><\/span>\u201d also means \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>somewhat true<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d Rephrased, it is arguably an artful dodge by Gedo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This debate tactic, wittingly or not by Gedo, could be called a red-herring or an artful dodge. See the definitions above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at this portion of Gedo\u2019s post.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\">But your posts about Buffet aren&#8217;t limited to MH industry controversies (Uncle Warren&#8217;s alleged anti-competitive behavior, for example). They focus far too often on Buffet&#8217;s (and Gates&#8217;) political beliefs or ideological perspectives, making the posts seem more like trolling than an industry blog<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gedo is correct in saying that MHProNews posts aren\u2019t limited to \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">MH industry controversies (Uncle Warren&#8217;s alleged anti-competitive behavior, for example)<\/span>.\u201d <\/strong>Note that the listing of third-parties reporting on Buffet\u2019s \u201calleged\u201d anti-competitive tactics above or found at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomelivingnews.com\/case-against-clayton-homes-years-of-legal-regulatory-claims\/\">link here<\/a> are significant. They come from both sides of the media divide. Among the reasons to do this is because it is a real-world example of how an authentic discussion or debate can occur.<\/p>\n<p>We are not speculating on why Gedo wanted to debate this topic, or why on two prior occasions Gedo -an MHI member \u2013 has decided to try to defend Clayton Homes, their affiliated lenders, MHI, Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett, et al. Gedo\u2019s reasons are not irrelevant, but they don\u2019t change how the debate is analyzed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Note that at no time have we \u2018name called\u2019 or smeared Gedo.<\/li>\n<li>By contrast, he used some statements that could be construed as a slur.<\/li>\n<li>Any slur is what is known in logic or debate as an attack on the person or an \u201cad hominem\u201d attack.<\/li>\n<li>An ad hominem is a distraction, not a valid argument. Such methods don\u2019t make Gedo\u2019s argument stronger, they make it weaker.<\/p>\n<p>Summing up. <strong>Gedo has not refuted a single point made in our report<\/strong>.
