But something must happen to grab that spotlight.\u00a0 On Friday, Team Warren kicked the hornet&#8217;s nest of big business.\u00a0 Which means that her fight is now on.<\/p>\n<p>What every business, person, or politicians needs is energy. That Acura commercial &#8211; it has energy. The Warren campaign arguably just lifted their energy level.<\/p>\n<p>Wittingly or not, for good or ill, there is no doubt that Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA-D) has several touch-points with manufactured housing professional interests.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be blunt.<\/p>\n<p>Some in MHVille cheer her, while others jeer. But that too has potential energizing value for a firebrand like Warren.\u00a0 As her hoped for GOP counterpart in the Oval Office has demonstrated, one can rise in the polls, even when controversial.\u00a0 Sometimes, one rises in the polls, especially when a person or organization are shaking things up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/awwCEHcssGo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On MHProNews\u2019 <em>Masthead<\/em> editorial blog, let\u2019s note for new readers that Senator Warren \u2013 the long-shot for the 2020 Democratic nominee for president &#8211; has addressed groups that included MHAction. She was a driving force behind Dodd-Frank and the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).<\/p>\n<p>Those won\u2019t earn her fan mail from several quarters.\u00a0 We hope to engage with their campaign on those issues. That said, let&#8217;s now turn to the plus column.<\/p>\n<p>Friday, the Warren campaign\u2019s emailed statement to <em>MHProNews<\/em> stressed her emphasis on antitrust legislation. \u00a0Of course that campaign plank will cause shivers for some, but may draw curious smiles from others who are small- to mid-sized business professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Warren&#8217;s strongly stated antitrust stance ought to have Republicans, President Donald J. They are over 100 million living in rentals, said <em>CityLabs<\/em> in 2018.\u00a0 The vast majority of renters, per the National Association of Realtors &#x2122; (NAR), want to be homeowners.<\/p>\n<p>NAR\u2019s Scholastica \u2018Gay\u2019 Cororaton, CBE, did research that praised manufactured homes in 2018.\u00a0 Cororaton noted in her research that millions of renters pay the same or more monthly as what it would cost them to live in a manufactured home. Our informal research confirmed the <em>NY Times<\/em> claim. Because Elizabeth Warren &#8211; with who&#8217;s campaign we\u2019ve made clear that there are stances she holds that we disagree with &#8211; is arguably dead right about the over-arching power of Big Tech and other monopolies. If you go to any website, there\u2019s more than a 70% chance that it\u2019s owned or run by Google or Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>America\u2019s biggest tech companies are controlling more and more of our digital lives.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s why tech companies with nearly unfettered power aren\u2019t a good thing: They buy potential rivals, like Facebook did with Instagram and WhatsApp, limiting innovation and choice. They create marketplaces that they own and compete on \u2014 a conflict of interest that lets them snuff out smaller rivals \u2014 like Amazon and Google have done for shopping, search tools, and online ads.<\/p>\n<p>They bully cities and states into showering them with massive taxpayer handouts \u2014 and spend the profits they get from being the only game in town to lobby and rig the rules even further in their favor.<\/p>\n<p>They even scare investors away from funding new startups \u2014 because what\u2019s the use in going up against a giant corporation that\u2019ll just snap you up or drive you out of business?<\/p>\n<p>This all means less competition, less innovation, and a worse internet for all of us. Think about it: If you\u2019re not happy with Facebook\u2019s privacy policy, maybe you\u2019d like to spend your time on Instagram instead. Except, wait: Facebook owns Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got to call it out. And we\u2019ve got to do something about it. So today, I\u2019m proposing a new plan to break up the biggest tech companies and make sure these corporations don\u2019t get so powerful that they undermine our democracy.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a long history in America of breaking up companies if they have too much power in the marketplace: Standard Oil, AT&amp;T, and the railroad industry led to the bipartisan creation of our first antitrust laws.<\/p>\n<p>What I\u2019m proposing is right in line with our country\u2019s history \u2014 and it\u2019s a big part of what has allowed our economy to grow and new companies to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how our plan works \u2014 there are two big pieces to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#1: Pass a new law for \u201cPlatform Neutrality.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a ginormous tech company that\u2019s created a platform for other businesses to compete on \u2014 like the Amazon marketplace, or the Google ad exchange \u2014 you shouldn\u2019t also own a company that sells on it. Put simply: You shouldn\u2019t be able to tilt the playing field in your own direction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2 Appoint regulators who\u2019ll use <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">existing legal tools<\/span> to unwind tech mergers that illegally undermine competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the antitrust laws that are already on the books, we can undo big mergers that never should have been approved in the first place \u2014 and give smaller and medium-sized companies a fighting chance to compete with the big guys. That means we break Facebook away from Instagram and WhatsApp, Amazon away from Whole Foods, Google away from Nest, and more. We could be doing this right now \u2014 but we need a president (ahem) who\u2019ll appoint regulators to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p>So what would the internet look like after all these reforms?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what won\u2019t change: You\u2019ll still be able to go on Google and search like you do today. You\u2019ll still be able to go on Amazon and find 30 different coffee machines that you can get delivered to your house in two days. You\u2019ll still be able to go on Facebook and see how your old friend from school is doing.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what will change: Small businesses would have a fair shot to sell their products on Amazon without the fear of Amazon pushing them out of business. Google couldn\u2019t smother competitors by demoting their products on Google Search. Facebook would face real pressure from Instagram and WhatsApp to improve their user experience and protect our privacy. Tech entrepreneurs would have a fighting chance to compete against the tech giants.<\/p>\n<p>This is how we\u2019ll make sure we get more competition and more new ideas in the tech economy, instead of just a few giant tech companies calling all the shots \u2014 and regular people not having much say in the tools we use everyday.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how we get innovation. That\u2019s how we get an internet that does a better and better job of letting us stay connected with each other \u2014 from pictures of grandkids to emails and petitions like this one. That\u2019s how we protect our privacy in a rapidly changing world.<\/p>\n<p>We can get this done. We can make big, structural change.
