{"id":1528,"date":"2011-03-23T13:31:46","date_gmt":"2011-03-23T18:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/tonykovach\/?p=1528"},"modified":"2012-01-23T15:54:07","modified_gmt":"2012-01-23T21:54:07","slug":"change-or-die-delivering-success-for-manufactured-housing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/change-or-die-delivering-success-for-manufactured-housing\/","title":{"rendered":"Change or Die &#8211; Delivering Success for Manufactured Housing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard an interesting fact yesterday.\u00a0 In 1900 there were some 1800 carriage builders in the U.S. \u00a0Today, only one of<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1530\" href=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/change-or-die-delivering-success-for-manufactured-housing\/body-by-fisher-2\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1530\" title=\"Body by Fisher\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/tonykovach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Body-by-Fisher1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"111\" height=\"84\" \/><\/a> those firms survived &#8211; Fisher &#8211; and they did so by adapting, by changing with the times.\u00a0 <strong><em>Body by Fisher<\/em><\/strong>, now a \u00a0branch of General Motors (GM), became famous and wealth followed.\u00a0 The horse-drawn carriage became the horseless carriage, the automobile.\u00a0 Visionary Fisher brothers adapted, they changed; others in their field financially died.<\/p><div id=\"manuf-932863666\" class=\"manuf-content manuf-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3870480136270376\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3870480136270376\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>I attend a fair number of meetings every year along with other industry professionals.\u00a0 I can picture the faces of some who told me they are near business failure.\u00a0 They often did not want things to change, but change they must, or their enterprise will fail. The compassionate thing to do is to gently and respectfully say, <em>&#8220;We all have to change in life. \u00a0In business, if we fail to successfully adapt and change, then the business must be sold or die.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are thousands &#8211; perhaps a quarter million or more &#8211; vacant sites in MHCs across the country.\u00a0 There are dozens \u2013 hundreds actually \u2013 of idled and near idled factories among manufactured home builders.\u00a0\u00a0 We have thousands of closed manufactured home retail centers.\u00a0 Our population continues to grow.\u00a0 We have the most affordable home product available.\u00a0 Hello?\u00a0 What is wrong with this picture?<\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem lies with a failure to make sure that everyone involved in a transaction wins.\u00a0 A deal is a truly good deal only when all the parties benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Win-lose is a sure recipe for failure. \u00a0Only the short-term thinker uses a win-lose approach.\u00a0 The book <strong><em>How the Mighty Fall<\/em><\/strong> by Jim Collins chronicles how ego and ignoring the facts cost once-successful companies their very existence.<\/p>\n<p>In a win-win approach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Give the customer a great experience.<\/li>\n<li>Do not over promise.<\/li>\n<li>Do not under deliver.<\/li>\n<li>Set the right expectation.<\/li>\n<li>Do all that you reasonably can to meet an expectation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ve personally seen retail, community or other business locations turn around in very short order using some very simple concepts.\u00a0 The ones above are among them.<\/p>\n<p>We can talk about the importance of issues like the SAFE Act, Dodd-Frank, the looming issues from the yet-to-birth Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CGPB) or many others.\u00a0 We can talk about a lack of financing, but the reality is until we protect both consumers and lenders &#8211; to make sure they are set up to win, and not lose &#8211; we are kidding ourselves.\u00a0 In a recent Industry related meeting, the statement was made that captive finance can work because there is no lender &#8216;to screw.&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0 No temptation to phony a down payment, or a document, or fail to properly service a customer.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t expect Washington to give us an FHA Title I (or any other program) that is set up for losses, so our Industry can sell more homes.\u00a0 That dog won&#8217;t hunt anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the cold, hard facts.\u00a0 The HUD Code Manufactured Housing Industry is able to reverse course just as soon as people are willing to change and adapt.\u00a0 Manufactured homes will take off again in the market when we make sure that customers, lenders, and all involved parties properly benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Happy customers, profitable stakeholders, there is your simple, long term, recipe for success!<\/p>\n<p>For those who are ready to change and succeed, please attend one or more of the following events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/manufactured-housing-community-seminars\"><strong>Tunica seminars<\/strong> <\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/the-great-southwest-home-show\">2011 Great Southwest Home Show in Tulsa OK <\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/calendar\/953-2011-national-congress-expo \">MHI Congress in Las Vegas NV<\/a> <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/homexpo-2011\">HOMExpo 2011 in York PA<\/a> <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We will be <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/dominate-your-local-market\">presenting and exhibiting<\/a><\/strong> at all of the first three events. \u00a0We look forward to seeing hundreds of you at one of these events<\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks to the factories, exhibitors and associations who make it possible<\/em>, most retailers, community operators and others can attend Tunica, The Great Southwest Home Show and HOMExpo 2011 for free.
