Someone like Professor Esther Sullivan &#8211; or those who cite her &#8211; may have grand intentions. But mistakes in her facts or a premise lead to false conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Esther Sullivan is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado Denver<\/strong><\/span>,\u201d is the bio brief for her book, \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Manufactured Insecurity Mobile Home Parks and Americans\u2019 Tenuous Right to Place<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s note that your Masthead writer is not endorsing Sullivan\u2019s tome, which I\u2019ve not yet read. Rather, this is an analysis of points raised by Sullivan, in her TED Talk. Such talks normally distill the key points of a writer\u2019s research. But to be fair, one should also consider varied viewpoints.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what one fawning reviewer of Sullivan\u2019s \u2018<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Manufactured Insecurity-Mobile Home Parks and Americans\u2019 Tenuous Right to Place<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u2019 said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Through a beautifully executed ethnography, Esther Sullivan deftly details how for many living in manufactured mobile homes the fa\u00e7ade of the American Dream often turns into displacement and disillusionment. Not only is this work a meaningful contribution to housing studies, it also advances our understandings of social inequality reproduction. For those interested in America\u2019s private-market affordable housing challenges and how they perpetuate vulnerability mainly, but not exclusively, among disadvantaged whites, this is a must-read<\/strong><\/span>.&#8221; \u2014 Derek S. Hyra, author of Race, Class, and Politics in the Cappuccino City.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-15072\" src=\"https:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/EthnogoraphyAnthropolgyUCLInfographicMastheadBlogManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNEws-474x430.jpg\" alt=\"EthnogoraphyAnthropolgyUCLInfographicMastheadBlogManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNEws\" width=\"474\" height=\"430\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another reviewer praising her work:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Esther Sullivan has produced a comprehensive and nuanced analysis of manufactured housing in the United States. This is an outstanding and unique ethnographic study of park closings that deserves wide readership among policymakers, advocates, and scholar<\/span>s<\/strong>.&#8221;\u2014Edward Goetz, Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, author of The One-Way Street of Integration: Fair Housing and the Pursuit of Racial Justice in American Cities.<\/p>\n<p>From those quotes of praise, and what they\u2019ve published, you begin get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s her publisher\u2019s own plug for her book.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Manufactured Insecurity<\/strong><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong> is the first book of its kind to provide an in-depth investigation of the social, legal, geospatial, and market forces that intersect to create housing insecurity for an entire class of low-income residents. Drawing on rich ethnographic data collected before, during, and after mobile home park closures and community-wide evictions in Florida and Texas\u2014the two states with the largest mobile home populations\u2014Manufactured Insecurity forces social scientists and policymakers to respond to a fundamental question: how do the poor access and retain secure housing in the face of widespread poverty, deepening inequality, and scarce legal protection? With important contributions to urban sociology, housing studies, planning, and public policy, the book provides a broader understanding of inequality and social welfare in the United States today<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan says in the video posted below that she lived in communities marked for closure.\u00a0 Hmmm, okay, but how does that give an authentic look at manufactured homes or communities?\u00a0 Closures are obviously troubling and disruptive for many.\u00a0 But thankfully, it is still the minority of communities where that occurs.\u00a0 GIGO.\u00a0 Her input is flawed, thus her premise is tainted too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>GSMOL, Clayton Homes, and the Boston Globe\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t have to agree with all the policy points that the GSMOL (Golden State Manufactured Home Owner League) stand for to understand why some of their leaders might think Professor Sullivan has talking points useful to their cause.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-15085\" src=\"https:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/EvictionsMobileHomeParksInsightsTexasFlordaGSMOLManufacturedHousingIndustryCommentaryAnalysisMastheadMHProNews-575x281.jpg\" alt=\"EvictionsMobileHomeParksInsightsTexasFlordaGSMOLManufacturedHousingIndustryCommentaryAnalysisMastheadMHProNews\" width=\"575\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But then ask yourself this pressing question.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why would Clayton Homes commission the<em> Boston Globe<\/em> article by Jon Guber that cites Sullivan and her work?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shouldn\u2019t community owners, and manufactured home owner groups alike sit up and question Clayton Homes motivations in spotlighting Professor Sullivan?\u00a0 Is it possible that the wool is being pulled, to block vision?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15078\" src=\"https:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/AmericasMostInvisbileCommunitiesMobileHomeParksDailyBusinessNewsMHproNewsTedXMileHighEstherSullivanManufacturedInsecurity.jpg\" alt=\"AmericasMostInvisbileCommunitiesMobileHomeParksDailyBusinessNewsMHproNewsTedXMileHighEstherSullivanManufacturedInsecurity\" width=\"600\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MH Industry Colleagues on Sullivan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s begin with Sullivan. Manufactured home industry colleagues have said they tried to engage her, without success. Be that as it may, Sullivan needs to have an authentic dialogue with someone who will respectfully yet authentically test and challenge her premise and conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>A careful look at the infographic below reveals just some of the factual errors found in her TED Talk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15076\" src=\"https:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/InfographicMobileManufacturedHomeManufacturedHousingIndustryFactsDataResearchMobileManufacturedHomeLivingNews-445x768.jpg\" alt=\"InfographicMobileManufacturedHomeManufacturedHousingIndustryFactsDataResearchMobileManufacturedHomeLivingNews-445x768\" width=\"445\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Further, Sullivan mixes and misuses terminology. Because of the GIGO principle, the same is true of what Jon Guber published in the <em>Boston Globe<\/em> too.<\/p>\n<p>Again, why would Clayton Homes commission that Guber advertorial?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concerns Over Clayton Homes, and the Esther Sullivan Nexus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once an objective scientist or serious researcher discovers a fact, spotting that point again later becomes easier.<\/p>\n<p>Clayton Homes and Berkshire Hathaway have attracted and\/or generated numerous types of controversies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/nbc-video-federal-authorities-investigating-clayton-homes-maxine-waters-denounces-lending-discrimination-against-minorities\/<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The articles linked above and below are just two examples.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/clayton-homes-consumer-complaints-saga-continues-mold-and-more\/<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of manufactured home professionals ignored or overlooked such stories for years.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Haven\u2019t they just continued to pop back up?\u00a0 Does ignoring the periodic problems for the image of our industry help or harm manufactured home professionals and home owners?<\/p>\n<p>Until recently, who was tracking the ties that Buffett&#8217;s money has with activist group, MHAction, via the Tides Foundation?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomelivingnews.com\/manufactured-home-resident-group-president-cautions-against-mhaction-surprising-background-reveal-to-manufactured-housing-action\/<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It can\u2019t be said too often. Berkshire Hathaway has numerous media assets. Warren Buffett can get on TV almost anytime he wants. If they wanted to honestly and honorably grow the manufactured home industry and its reputation, why not run one legitimate article a month from each of their 31 BH Media Group outlets?<\/p>\n<p>If the BH Media Group did that, there would be a parade in <em>Google News<\/em> that could rapidly change the way our industry is perceived.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they purportedly commissioned this article in the <em>Boston Globe\u2019s<\/em> real estate section, that cites Sullivan? Excuse me?<\/p>\n<p>Manufactured home industry pros and investors, do you see any good reason for Clayton to support Sullivan\u2019s work, if they want growth?\u00a0 For manufactured home owners, the terminology and several of her statements make manufactured homes look at best like a questionable investment.\u00a0 How does that help your cause?<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/hes-lying-campaign-insider-video-dont-do-politics-tell-jim-clayton-phil-bredesen-and-marsha-blackburn-preserving-access-to-manufactured-hou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claytons money connection in the background of the Taylor Swift campaign controversy<\/a> reveals more evidence of mistyfing behavior &#8211; if they wanted a surge of growth at this time &#8211; that the industry\u2019s pros should consider.<\/p>\n<p>Some MHI member tell me they have no choice, they are \u2018compelled\u2019 to be members.
