As a heads up to readers, this mentions legislation, <i>but that isn\u2019t the headline topic<\/i>. The example that follows exemplifies a reality check that will tee up an \u201c<strong>Aha! Moment<\/strong>&#8221; for many. <\/span><\/span><\/p><div id=\"manuf-2068402144\" class=\"manuf-content manuf-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3870480136270376\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3870480136270376\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The subjects Clayton Homes has been included in mainstream media reports included such topics as their support for the amendment proposed to S. 2155. That amendment is based upon the Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) rule proposal found in the <i>Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act<\/i>. That\u2019s fine.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The point? What\u2019s the Reality Check?<\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Clayton Homes, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Berkshire Hathaway, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Warren Buffett and his family like son Howard, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b><i><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">can get into the news virtually any time they want to do so<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Berkshire Hathaway owns numerous media outlets. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u2022<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0px; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">As one of the nation\u2019s largest home builders, Clayton could correct each and every example of mistaken reports in the media. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u2022<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0px; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Clayton has their own communications and marketing people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u2022<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0px; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">The Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) also have public relations (media) professionals.\u00a0 For years, the MHI executive committee has included 2 of the 4 seats held by Berkshire Hathaway, plus years of Tim Williams, President and CEO of 21st Mortgage as MHI Chairman.\u00a0 The other 2 of 4 the executive committee seats had ties to Berkshire Hathaway too.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Clayton, MHI and Berkshire Hathaway can comment on &#8211; or correct the record on &#8211; any misleading, mistaken, bad terminology &#8211; &#8211; anything! &#8211; &#8211; associated with the industry.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Will anyone seriously question that claim? \u00a0 Please, send me a response that explains this topic in some other logical fashion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Given that premise, that Clayton\/MHI could correct any or every flawed media report, how about this question. <strong>Why don\u2019t they do so?<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For over a year, we\u2019ve done a periodic test. It&#8217;s this.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve contacted mainstream media about a problematic news report about manufactured housing that they ran. We ask, has Clayton, MHI or others in the industry contacted you about this? In essentially every case, the answer has been \u201c<strong>no<\/strong>.\u201d One example was in Clayton&#8217;s home state.\u00a0 The routine answer was, no, they&#8217;ve not reached out at all. This happens week after week, year after year. Given that no one I&#8217;ve ever met aspired to be &#8216;trailer trash,&#8217; can you see why this terrible terminology needs to be tackled? Where is Clayton and MHI on this or other negative media related issues? <\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In interview and discussions with home owners and professionals, concerns about being stigmatized by the term \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>trailer trash<\/strong><\/span>\u201d ranks high. It\u2019s a reason millennials have given for not even considering a \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>mobile homes<\/strong><\/span>\u201d &#8211; manufactured homes &#8211; as an option (see related reports, linked below).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Image and misleading information directly or indirectly costs the industry hundreds of thousands of new home sales per year.\u00a0 That\u2019s billions in sales a year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Why doesn\u2019t Clayton and MHI go aggressively after that improper media reporting and terminology issue? A big factor can be summed up with improper information and image. Pretty pictures and videos alone will not fix this. What will? We know this from experience in the field with clients.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Correcting the record, time after time, lifts the industry\u2019s shoppers from interest to buyers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now I happen to believe that Warren Buffett, and Kevin Clayton are intelligent people. Tim Williams said it himself. There\u2019s a good case to be made for correcting the record each and every time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So why don\u2019t they???<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The 64 Billion Dollar Question<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, famous for the Sherlock Holmes detective stories, famously observed that <em>when you eliminate the possibilities, whatever remains must be the truth.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kevin Clayton said over 6 years ago that they were \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>ready<\/strong><\/span>\u201d then to do an image\/public relations campaign. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They can get in the news when they want to do so. Why don\u2019t they fix this? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a state association executive told me today, MHI has a full time media person that could make that routine outreach whenever negative, inaccurate news hits.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then why don\u2019t they do so?\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the answer to that, the plausible premise&#8230;<strong>the Reality Check<\/strong>&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Warren Buffett said he likes a bargain.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Buffett also commands his company presidents to expand their \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>moat<\/strong><\/span>\u201d year after year. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>By keeping the industry\u2019s image problematic,<\/strong> it <strong><em>obviously keeps new manufactured home sales at a lower level than it would otherwise be<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>That in turn arguably hurts every other business of every size engaged in manufactured housing in America.<\/strong>\u00a0 That means that other factories, retailers, etc. <em>can be purchased cheaper than they otherwise would be.<\/em> \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>It also means that their market share can grow,<\/strong><em> until the day comes that they take their foot off the brake peddle.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Isn&#8217;t this stating the obvious? <strong>That\u2019s the reality check. They can get in the news.\u00a0 They can correct poor reporting, every time, if they wanted to do so.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Clayton and MHI are not responsible for every piece of bad news that hits the media each and every week. <i>But they are 100 percent able &#8211; and thus, responsible &#8211; for not doing all that they can to fix bad reports when they occur.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Those MHI \u201c<strong>image<\/strong>\u201d videos and advertorials are clearly ineffective. MHI has admitted at times that the industry is still performing at historically low levels. Why?
