<em>Ross Kinzler<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Priceless, direct quotes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Priceless?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They are significant observations &#8211; and de facto admissions &#8211; by someone \u2018defending\u2019 MHI, and their \u2018new class\u2019 of manufactured homes.<\/p>\n<p>The rest that follows are details, context, and commentary.<\/p>\n<p>Briefly consider the point Ross Kinzler made about a prior MHI project that he used as an analogy to the MHI-backed \u2018new class of homes\u2019 concept.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Kinzler raises the interesting comparison between MHI\u2019s previous \u2018<span style=\"color: #993300;\">Urban Design Project<\/span>,\u2019 which didn\u2019t perform as planned, and the MHI proposed \u201c<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>new class of manufactured homes<\/em><\/strong><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is Ross who said the Urban Design Project <em>had no lasting market effect<\/em>, a nice way of saying MHI didn&#8217;t move the needle.<\/p>\n<p>Aren\u2019t those polite phrases for <em><strong>failed?<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that Kinzler has reportedly done some consulting for MHI.\u00a0 Yet, Ross won\u2019t defend MHI\u2019s legislative agenda.<\/p>\n<p>That speaks volumes.<\/p>\n<p>The rest are useful details and commentary, but if a reader stopped right here, the take way is that MHI\u2019s prior \u2018similar\u2019 project failed, and MHI\u2019s legislative agenda won\u2019t be defended even by those who have been or are paid by MHI, or whom MHI staff has called &#8216;affiliates.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Kinzler, has reportedly done consulting for MHI, and yet he still won&#8217;t defend their legislative agenda?<\/p>\n<p>Why not?<\/p>\n<p>Aren\u2019t those two directly quoted sentences by Kinzler at the top warnings for every independent community, retailer, producer, service provider, and lender?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomelivingnews.com\/cityscapes-at-the-mills-of-carthage-boston-and-other-cities-are-you-listening\/<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>(MHLivingNews has spotlighted one of the HUD Code<br \/>\nmanufactured home projects dubbed<br \/>\n<\/em><em>the Urban Design Project that Ross Kinzler&#8217;s<br \/>\ncomments referenced.)<\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>To Be Fair and Accurate, There are Many Possibilities <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are several possible reasons why Kinzler, or others in the MHI camp, don\u2019t want to defend MHI\u2019s legislative agenda.\u00a0 We are not casting any dispersions on Ross, Amy or any others.<\/p>\n<p><em>People can make good faith errors,<\/em> and good faith mistakes in reasoning.<\/p>\n<p>That, by the way, is one of the reasons why public debate can be healthy!\u00a0 If there is an honest fact or analysis error, let that be logically aired out in public.<\/p>\n<p>Which begs the question, why then does MHI and their surrogates often duck such debate? When key questions are asked about MHI, Berkshire Hathaway, et al, why do they all go quiet?<\/p>\n<p>But as the CSUN &#8211; California State University &#8211; says in a report on<em> logical fallacies<\/em>, <strong>one of the reasons to know and spot errors in reasoning, is that once an error is spotted,<\/strong><em> that error can be removed from the discussion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Doing that saves time in the long run.\u00a0 Such honest, intellectual analysis dates back over 2,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>Why keep repeating some variation on a logical error?\u00a0 We&#8217;re doing MHI members and non-members alike a favor by spotlighting what look to be logical, legal or other errors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Sparked the Flak<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ICYMI, the email in the article linked below is part of what sparked all of this flak this past week.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/keith-anderson-ceo-champion-homes-mhi-new-class-monopoly-concerns-memo-harms-owners-independents\/<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nathan Smith on the MHI Agenda and Track Record<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I credit former MHI Chairman Nathan Smith for admitting during the video below that MHI <em>needed to admit the associations prior mistakes<\/em>, and make an effort to learn to avoid them.\u00a0 Smith&#8217;s admission was an important step. But have MHI&#8217;s leaders in fact learned from prior errors? Is there any consequence for MHI leaders from failures?\u00a0 In the private sector, a mistake costs jobs or money or both.\u00a0 What happens when MHI errors?\u00a0 Where are the consequences?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/232383533\" width=\"576\" height=\"324\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span class=\"mce_SELRES_start\" style=\"width: 0px; line-height: 0; overflow: hidden; display: inline-block;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One possible reason why Kinzler won\u2019t comment is MHI\u2019s legislative agenda and history is simple.\u00a0 The MHI track record and agenda are not an easy to logically defend or explain.<\/p>\n<p>MHI&#8217;s Rick Robinson, an attorney trained in debate and objective analysis, won&#8217;t defend MHI&#8217;s position either, nor will he or anyone else at MHI do so.<\/p>\n<p>Why not?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2297\" src=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Ross_Kinzler_credit_Community_Connections_posted_on_MHProNews.png\" alt=\"Ross_Kinzler_credit_Community_Connections_posted_on_MHProNews\" width=\"75\" height=\"114\" \/>So Kinzler&#8217;s in plenty of company when it comes <em>to not defending MHI&#8217;s agenda or track record.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another reason, as this writer replied to Kinzler <em>is that the logic, history, ethics, and theories behind the MHI agenda are dubious at best<\/em>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a relevant point.\u00a0 In fact, Kinzler was the one that pointed out the steep decline in manufactured housing production, and noted the harmful ripple effects throughout the industry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9716\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9716\" style=\"width: 575px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9716\" src=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/average-shipment-per-decade-manufactured-home-posted-on-mhpronews-com-d-575x381.jpg\" alt=\"average-shipment-per-decade-manufactured-home-posted-on-mhpronews-com d\" width=\"575\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/average-shipment-per-decade-manufactured-home-posted-on-mhpronews-com-d-575x381.jpg 575w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/average-shipment-per-decade-manufactured-home-posted-on-mhpronews-com-d-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/average-shipment-per-decade-manufactured-home-posted-on-mhpronews-com-d.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i> There are tons of negative impacts for low volumes of new MH sales. One is that there are fewer used homes on the market. Positions like the arguably contradictory position on the DOE Rule led to a flip flop that MHI leaders don\u2019t want to admit.\u00a0 Their flip flop on Clinton\/Trump, their flip-flop on Pam Danner\/HUD, etc. all can reasonably be seen as falling into that category.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But once more, in fairness, there are other possibilities.\u00a0What we know is that Kinzler won\u2019t defend MHI\u2019s agenda, and neither will MHI publicly defend their agenda; <strong>why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those who seek the truth on any subject want solid answers to reasonable questions. The chart above shows some of the more common logical errors, but another not shown, that is used when George Allen enters a discussion is the red herring.&#8217; Allen also likes ad hominem attacks. By intent or by mistake, the fallacies in reason lead people to wrong conclusions. <\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kinzler Defended Bliss, A Deeper Look<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kinzler indicated he was defended his colleague Amy Bliss. But Amy <em>was not attacked<\/em>.\u00a0 Ross \u2018defended\u2019 Bliss by what\u2019s known as \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>straw man<\/strong><\/span>\u201d arguments. He said things neither <em>MHProNews,<\/em> nor this writer have said.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Kinzler misread?<\/p>\n<p>Then,\u00a0Ross ducked the same questions and opportunities to discuss by phone to clarify possible misunderstandings that was offered to Bliss, why?<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, I personally like and respect Amy and Ross &#8212; so this isn\u2019t <em>personal,<\/em> from our side of the fence, this is a purely professional disagreement.<\/p>\n<p>Think of it as a clinical doctor\u2019s analysis &#8212; what do the tests and the facts reveal?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14561\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14561\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14561\" src=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/RedHerringDefinitionFalseArgumentDistractionMisleading.png\" alt=\"RedHerringDefinitionFalseArgumentDistractionMisleading\" width=\"595\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/RedHerringDefinitionFalseArgumentDistractionMisleading.png 595w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/RedHerringDefinitionFalseArgumentDistractionMisleading-150x92.png 150w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/RedHerringDefinitionFalseArgumentDistractionMisleading-575x353.png 575w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14561\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Wittingly nor not, George Allen often falls into<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> red herring<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>ad hominem<\/strong> <\/span>tactics. When those are used intentionally, they are designed to <strong>distract<\/strong> or <strong>belittle,<\/strong> without actually answering the questions under debate or discussion.\u00a0 <strong>For<\/strong> <strong>someone trained in debate, their use signals the weakness of the argument of those who use such methods<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>George Allen, a Bit Different?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Neither Kinzler nor Bliss accepted the offer to discuss items by phone, to clarify understanding. While written words are useful, they can be misunderstood. The combination of written and spoken words can thus become one way to avoid misunderstandings.<\/p>\n<p>Allen&#8217;s situation is perhaps different.<\/p>\n<p>He made an interesting revelation, saying he has quit MHI.\u00a0 He&#8217;s not alone.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/state-associations-companies-quit-membership-in-manufactured-housing-institute-mhi-one-explains-in-writing-why\/<\/p>\n<p>Then, Allen says he has<strong><em> &#8216;<span style=\"color: #993300;\">no dog in the hunt<\/span><\/em><\/strong>,&#8217;\u00a0 but begins blasting away furiously with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>attacks on the person<\/strong><\/span> (= ad hominem fallacy) or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>red herring<\/strong><\/span> tactics.\u00a0 Those have been an Allen-isms traits for some years.<\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s revealing is the fury of the defenders of MHI, without actually addressing the specific points made or concerns raised.<\/p>\n<p>Why weren\u2019t specific questions, being directly answered?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t Bother Me With Evidence or Third Party Report\u2019s&#8230;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an old saying, &#8216;<strong>don&#8217;t bother me with facts, my mind is made up<\/strong>.&#8217;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rick Robinson<\/li>\n<li>Richard &#8216;Dick&#8217; Jennison,<\/li>\n<li>Lesli Gooch,<\/li>\n<li>Amy Bliss,<\/li>\n<li>Ross Kinzler,<\/li>\n<li>George Allen and others have ducked out on dealing with specific concerns raised by voices inside the industry and those outside of the industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Allen, that&#8217;s perhaps particularly problematic, because he claims the mantle of defending independent communities.\u00a0 Is he failing them, by not digging into the realities? Why is he now denying concerns on similar issues he himself has previously raised?\u00a0 Has Allen flip-flopped? Among them are various kinds of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and non-believers. My parents raised us, thank God, with lived examples of how you treated all people with respect, and dignity.<\/p>\n<p>People of good will can have disagreements.<\/p>\n<p>So the response? It ought to be to examine issues, and if someone is mistaken &#8211; to show them their error.<\/p>\n<p>But that isn\u2019t done by name calling.\u00a0 Even when we strongly disagree with Mr. Buffet, Berkshire Hathaway or MHI, we aren&#8217;t name calling or mud-slinging. Yes, at times we\u2019ve exchanged thoughts in ways that hurt the other\u2019s feelings, but we get over it, forgive as is needed, and move on.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t have to agree with him, nor he with me, to have a rich intellectual discussion on a topic we disagree about. One of my favorites is Tim&#8217;s fraternity example. It&#8217;s terrific.<\/p>\n<p>A f<em>raternity<\/em> is at the root a <em>brotherhood.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Brothers &#8211; kinfolk, family &#8211; ought to be able to disagree with respect.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>MHProNews<\/em> has focused on facts, concerns, documents, behaviors, trends &#8211; which is a kind of history &#8211; and evidence. Where does the logic of a position or case take someone?<\/p>\n<p>I strive to hold no personal animus toward anyone in the industry, including those who have demonstrably wronged others or us, or have generally been unjust. \u00a0Telling someone to \u2018go to hell,\u2019 or worse solves nothing.<\/p>\n<p>If <em>MHProNews<\/em> is wrong on an interpretation, then that should be thoughtfully refuted, right? George or anyone, where is the need for rude name calling, or manipulative debaters tricks?<\/p>\n<p>If my bride and I were the only two on the planet who believed these concerns, there <em>might<\/em> be a better cause for others to say \u2018conspiracy theory,\u2019 as Bliss said. \u00a0 If we were the only ones to say, there is a risk from monopolistic behaviors, then mischaracterization by Ross, Bliss, or as Allen did\u00a0 &#8211; 9BTW, I\u2019m well aware of Allen\u2019s nice side, and we respect and value his service to our country0 &#8211; could make more sense.<\/p>\n<p>I like Amy and Ross on a personal level. But liking someone doesn\u2019t mean you have to agree.<\/p>\n<p>If MHI, Tim Williams &#8211; who can be <em>very charming and likable too<\/em> &#8211; Warren Buffett \u00a0&#8211; <em>ditto<\/em> &#8211; or anyone else wants to debate the issues, let\u2019s do so publicly, where the industry can tune in, and we should do so with mutual respect.<\/p>\n<p>No cheap shots or debaters dodges, like those in the chart above, are needed.<\/p>\n<p>My sincere belief is that the evidence shows that MHI is being used as a tool by the largest companies in manufactured housing. Others in the industry say so too.<\/p>\n<p>We believe that MHI has demonstrably made blunders for years.\u00a0 Rather than admit them now, as then MHI Chairman Nathan Smith did a few years ago, they and their surrogates are demonstrably using <em>tricks and tactics<\/em> to <strong>duck, dodge, distract, detract, diminish, or defame<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s wrong, in my view.<\/p>\n<p>If they were right, they have attorneys who are trained in debate, who could make us look foolish in public, with straight up debate.\u00a0 No tactics. I have no such advantage, no such formal training in debate.\u00a0 I think the last formal debate I was in, was high school or maybe even junior high.<\/p>\n<p>So why doesn&#8217;t MHI bring out their Ph.D. and attorneys and debate?\u00a0 Or why doesn&#8217;t Clayton Homes, et al, do the same?<\/p>\n<p>Let them try to honestly refute the concerns of voices across the political divide about monopolistic tactics.\u00a0 Again, see the link above from the recent report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/progressive-nation-reports-on-monopolies-cites-buffett-clayton-others-mh-industry-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Nation that cites monopolistic tactics and names Clayton Homes<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let them explain ethically why they kept others who do publishing as members, and not <em>MHProNews<\/em> (and our related operations)? No one ever accused me of disrupting an MHI meeting, nor of breaking an MHI rule, did they? All I ever did was ask questions, and offer different views if that seemed wise.\u00a0 Aren&#8217;t they violating what their 990 filings claim?
