Warren Buffett doesn\u2019t need to convince me or gain my agreement with him on that point.\u00a0 On that and the value of history, Mr. Buffett and this <em>Masthead<\/em> writer would agree.<\/p><div id=\"manuf-1534838596\" class=\"manuf-content manuf-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3870480136270376\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3870480136270376\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Buffett and we agree too on the value of research, reading, asking, listening, probing, and understanding.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, people can disagree professionally, without disparagement.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve said not one word against Clayton Homes\u2019 products, nor against the vast majority of their people, nor against most of those in MHI\u2019s membership, etc. In fact, <strong><em>professionals from those operations and 21st are among our sources<\/em><\/strong>. That should be obvious from the kinds of insights, quotes, etc. that we\u2019ve produced over the last year or so.<\/p>\n<p>We agree with the Urban Institute\u2019s stated principle that <em>evidence<\/em> and <em>the facts<\/em> should guide research.<\/p>\n<p>There must be good reasons why leaders at Clayton Homes, 21st, and MHI won\u2019t engage us in a public, video-recorded discussion or debate forum. One of the reasons why they won&#8217;t do so was suggested in yesterday\u2019s blockbuster <em>Daily Business News<\/em> report on the Urban Institute, linked below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/was-the-urban-institute-misled-duped-or-part-of-a-manufactured-housing-industry-scam\/<\/p>\n<p>But another point to consider in <em>why they won\u2019t publicly discuss our concerns and allegations<\/em> is this. Logically, if they were correct and we were honestly mistaken, they could prove it, right? FYI, that\u2019s an analogy, I\u2019m not a smoker. Why did MHI never use it? <\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>How Did We Come to Be Members of MHI?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Years ago, MHI members convinced me that if our organization &#8211; MHProNews\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomelivingnews.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MHLivingNews<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/ads-training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consulting, et al<\/a> &#8211; wanted to be a force for positive change in the manufactured home industry, we simply had to become members of MHI. \u00a0Those voices &#8211; however well-meaning they may have been &#8211; where they in hindsight mistaken?\u00a0 Or perhaps unwittingly, did those voices lead us into an unsought, unexpected, and undesired &#8211; <em>dark grace?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A current MHI member company president told me at Louisville that what MHI has been doing for years &#8216;<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>has made no sense<\/strong><\/span>.&#8217; He reminded me that \u2018<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Tony, you <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[MHProNews]<\/span><strong> are challenging people\u2019s paradigms<\/strong><\/span>.\u2019 He said what we know: some don\u2019t get it. But others, like him, do get it.<\/p>\n<p>Others are in between.<\/p>\n<p>If that company president had a choice, I&#8217;m not sure he would be an MHI member. Why do I say that? Because he thanked me for all that we are doing to spotlight what is actually going on in our industry. It was a waste &#8211; save this. It forced us to look deeper into what was really going on at MHI. The photo is a still from a video, and on that video, Jennison promised &#8211; promised dozens in that room that Preserving Access would be passed. It failed. In hindsight, given POTUS Barack Obama&#8217;s promise to veto the bill, what where they thinking?\u00a0 Or was it there as a show of effort, while the industry consolidated in the hands of fewer and fewer big ccompanies? <\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With that backdrop, the truth is I had several industry voices telling me &#8211; literally from the day they met Dick Jennison &#8211; that they didn\u2019t trust the man. \u00a0<em>I freely admit to arguing against their view<\/em>, Jennison seemed like a fine gent to me. But they in time were proven right. I was mistaken.\u00a0 You may have heard the old saying, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Fool me once, shame on you.\u00a0 Fool me twice, shame on me<\/strong><\/span>.&#8221;\u00a0 It was Jennison himself over time &#8211; by word, deed, and omission &#8211; that proved their points.<\/p>\n<p>A different, high profile, MHI member president told me recently that he wished Jennison had never been hired.<\/p>\n<p>But as noted, for some time &#8211; I liked Dick, mostly up to the point that:<\/p>\n<p>\u00d8\u00a0 women then working in the MHI office made a point of contacting and asking me to help them with a \u2018hostile workplace\u2019 issue, and they pointed specifically at Dick.<\/p>\n<p>\u00d8\u00a0 and up to the point when on camera, he began to argue <em>for slow growth<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I was stunned at both of those bullets.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/232349890\" width=\"576\" height=\"324\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I think Tim Williams\/21st would not deny in a court of law that I was stunned by Jennison\u2019s on-camera statement, because I took it up with him personally not long after that occurred.\u00a0 What association president worth their salt &#8211; working in an industry where most were then struggling for sales &#8211; would argue for slow growth?\u00a0 Perhaps the most logical way to understand it, was covered in yesterday&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/was-the-urban-institute-misled-duped-or-part-of-a-manufactured-housing-industry-scam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Daily Business News<\/em> special report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nathan Smith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I liked Nathan Smith too, he\u2019s an easy to like guy. To this day, <em>Nathan is likeable!<\/em> But how did it square with his electric personna of his that he didn\u2019t lift a finger to even <em>inquire<\/em> a<span style=\"display: inline !important; float: none; background-color: transparent; color: #333333; cursor: text; font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman','Bitstream Charter',Times,serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;\">bout the allegations of those women in the MHI office, complaining about <\/span>Dick Jennison?<\/p>\n<p>In the #metoo era, in hindsight, doesn\u2019t that looks bad?<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/sexual-harassment-not-just-hollywood-media-politicos-manufactured-housing-workplace-claims-high-profile-mh-cases-too\/<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tim Williams, President &amp; CEO of 21st Mortgage, Prior MHI Chairman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tim Williams and I had several fine conversations over the course of many years. I quite liked the gent. I recall Jim Clayton telling me how smart Williams is.\u00a0 I to this day, I would honestly agree. <em>Tim Williams\/21st is a very smart man<\/em>. Judging from the kind words he gave <em>MHProNews<\/em> to publish, he liked us too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11809\" src=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/TimWilliams21stMortgageCEOPresident-currentMHIChairman-onValueMHProNews-MHLivingNews-.png\" alt=\"TimWilliams21stMortgageCEOPresident-currentMHIChairman-onValueMHProNews-MHLivingNews-\" width=\"622\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/TimWilliams21stMortgageCEOPresident-currentMHIChairman-onValueMHProNews-MHLivingNews-.png 622w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/TimWilliams21stMortgageCEOPresident-currentMHIChairman-onValueMHProNews-MHLivingNews--150x140.png 150w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/TimWilliams21stMortgageCEOPresident-currentMHIChairman-onValueMHProNews-MHLivingNews--462x430.png 462w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But how did it square with Buffett\u2019s claimed support for integrity, that Williams<em> defended Jennison and Gooch,<\/em> who had sent out a message to MHI members that was pure spin, deceptive half-truths, and not the full truth?\u00a0 Why did he defend Jennison, when he arguably should have been removed his MHI president?<\/p>\n<p>Or why would you reward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/busted-failure-bonus-paid-richard-dick-jennison-ceo-manufactured-housing-institute-per-mhi-document\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennison with a raise and bonuses<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a national association CEO &#8211; who year after year, failed to accomplish what the assocation said was their goal?\u00a0Once more, perhaps the best way to understand that decision or those bonus\/raise is covered in yesterday&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/was-the-urban-institute-misled-duped-or-part-of-a-manufactured-housing-industry-scam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>MHProNews<\/em> special report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rick Robinson, SVP and General Counsel for MHI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rick Robinson is a nice guy too. Rick is witty, clever, and a fine writer. As a state executive told MHProNews, if they liked their position, why not get as much publicity as they possibly could? <\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These are just a sampling. These and other examples that could be cited took this writer from someone who was pro-MHI, to now, \u2018<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>you\u2019ve got to be kidding me<\/strong><\/span>\u2019 vantage point about that same organization.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tim Williams in San Antonio <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t need extra sources to tell me that Tim Williams stated in a room with a few dozen MHI members in it, the following. <strong>That neither Williams\/21st, nor Vanderbilt (VMF), turned over data that the GSEs wanted to make DTS happen in a more robust fashion<\/strong>.<em> Having sources is arguably often better than relying on yourself<\/em>. But I heard <em>Tim say as much with my own ears<\/em>, and I was watching the then MHI chair saying it when he was only a few yards away from where I sat in the same meeting room.<\/p>\n<p>It was a stunning set of statements.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/duty-to-serve-complete-waste-of-time-per-tim-williams-ceo-21st-mortgage-potus-trump-warren-buffett-insight\/<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>HUD and MHI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There came a point in time when I no longer needed sources to tell me that MHI was shadow boxing.\u00a0 MHI was <em>posturing<\/em> that they wanted to modify HUD\u2019s over-regulation. Those are the sad facts. <\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesli Gooch, MHI SVP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lesli Gooch\u2019s otherwise fine letter last summer about Regulatory Reform &#8211; re: those executive Presidential orders &#8211; missed what is arguably the key point. <em>Gooch never mentioned removing Pam Danner at all<\/em>.\u00a0 That statement of her&#8217;s is now public record.<\/p>\n<p>How is that possible? \u00a0These are intelligent people. I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> called them unintelligent.<\/p>\n<p>So, they surely knew that logically, the head of HUD&#8217;s MH department had a lot of power, for good or ill. Not removing Danner could make everything else they claimed to be trying, useless.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how shadow boxing works, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 All show, no go?<\/p>\n<p>When the most award-winning independent retailer in MHI history told us on-the-record that he supported Danner\u2019s re-assignment &#8211; Tim Williams said as much. I thought them wrong on the DOE Rule, and we editorialized on that point. Pam Danner must go.\u00a0 They were waiting for some magic green light to say what MHARR, Bob Crawford, Doug Gorman, <em>MHProNews,<\/em> and numerous others had said for some time.<\/p>\n<p>After months of MHARR, <em>MHProNews<\/em>, some states and businesses pushing for the change, now Danner &#8211; thankfully! &#8211; is gone from the job over the HUD Code manufactured housing program administrator\u2019s role that she had held.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But Danner is not gone because of MHI!<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Rather, Danner was removed <em>in spite of months of foot dragging by MHI<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/shake-up-at-hud-manufactured-housing-program-may-stop-industry-overregulation-per-mh-state-association\/<\/p>\n<p>Isn\u2019t that what the record reflects?<\/p>\n<p>Are they going to seriously point to their silly resolution in Congress, rather than the obvious ask of directly calling for the removal of Danner &#8211; <em>plus add those same concerns<\/em>, <strong>as examples of why Danner needed to go?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why has MHI so routinely been the last one to take the correct stance?\u00a0 Even their former chairman admitted that the assocation had made numerous past mistakes.\u00a0 MHI failure to get it right is why one of the states &#8211; see link above or below &#8211; dropped out of MHI, and they explained their reason for withdrawing.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a sad, but necessary indictment of the truth about their record. Years of failure for the majority of MHI members, but those years of failure pays off for those big companies looking to consolidate the industry&#8217;s smaller companies at bargain basement prices.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the letter from AZ is so important. One of their points was along those very lines.\u00a0 They pointed to success by the RV industry battling regulations that MHI failed to accomplish.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/state-associations-companies-quit-membership-in-manufactured-housing-institute-mhi-one-explains-in-writing-why\/<\/p>\n<p>Great point, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The End of the MHI Charade?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The<\/p>\n<p>\u00d8\u00a0 MHI charade,<\/p>\n<p>\u00d8\u00a0 or con job,<\/p>\n<p>\u00d8\u00a0 or whatever allegation or terminology one might want to use to describe it,<\/p>\n<p>is not over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But the MHI mask is falling off for many.<\/p>\n<p>No doubt, some big companies benefit from MHI.\u00a0 That\u2019s why the organization still exists.\u00a0 The big boys are happy with it.<\/p>\n<p>Pragmatically, we know some who feel that they must stay, because they have no choice. Arguably, by keeping sales low, that allowed Warren Buffet Moat to consolidate more of the manufactured housing &#8211; into the Berkshire\/Clayton\/21st et al \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Moat<\/span><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s shrewd.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s long term.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s exactly in keeping with Mr. Buffett\u2019s and Kevin Clayton\u2019s own words.<\/p>\n<p>We were never alone in being betrayed by MHI. That\u2019s other stories, for another time. Because numerous others have been betrayed too.\u00a0 I\u2019ve listened to the stories of some, and they are often heartbreaking.<\/p>\n<p>I can picture the faces of some who had that stunned <em>\u2018deer in the headlights\u2019<\/em> look, as they described their professional plights and tragedies to me.<\/p>\n<p>At the time that some told me, some of that I didn\u2019t understand in its full significance. So, given all of the above facts, evidence, concerns, failures, and allegations \u2014 how could that mess in Arlington, VA seriously be reformed?<\/p>\n<p>It is my belief that MHI\u2019s being disbanded <em>may happen to them<\/em>,<\/p>\n<p>\u00d8\u00a0 <strong>through legal actions<\/strong>, started by aggrieved members, and perhaps non-members too,<\/p>\n<p>\u00d8\u00a0<strong> as part of anti-trust efforts<\/strong>, that they will likely be caught up in,<\/p>\n<p>\u00d8\u00a0 <strong>unless MHI disbands themselves<\/strong>, voluntarily, before-hand.<\/p>\n<p>As we noted in yesterday\u2019s report, people are innocent until proven guilty.\u00a0 But an attorney we asked told us they see anti-trust action as a real possibility.\u00a0 As we&#8217;ve done throughout, we must call all of these matters allegations, because that is what the suits tell us we should say.<\/p>\n<p>But you as readers have the ability to discern fact from fiction, with common sense, and by looking at the facts.\u00a0 Skimming these facts will never lead you to the correct conclusion.
