{"id":1401,"date":"2011-02-18T22:19:58","date_gmt":"2011-02-19T04:19:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/tonykovach\/?p=1401"},"modified":"2011-02-20T18:59:49","modified_gmt":"2011-02-21T00:59:49","slug":"learning-from-others-including-those-we-dont-like-and-manufactured-housing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/learning-from-others-including-those-we-dont-like-and-manufactured-housing\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning from others, including those we don&#8217;t like, and Manufactured Housing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Learning from others.\u00a0 We can learn from those in our Industry, or from those outside of manufactured housing.\u00a0 We can learn from people who &#8216;do it right&#8217; in our business as well as from those who &#8216;do it wrong.&#8217;\u00a0 What is needed?\u00a0 A willingness to learn in the first place.<\/p><div id=\"manuf-1740329263\" class=\"manuf-content manuf-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3870480136270376\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3870480136270376\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t news.\u00a0 Some people network or go to as many events and meetings as they can, precisely because they realize that a single idea may be worth considerable sums of money to them.\u00a0 It is no surprise that many who attend meetings, do networking and are in groups or associations \u2013 actively so \u2013 are also the ones who often get ahead; yes, even in troubled times.<\/p>\n<p>Often, it&#8217;s the readers who are the leaders.<\/p>\n<p>It may surprise you to know that some of the authors or manufactured housing new items we share on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/\">MHMSM.com<\/a> see differently than the writers do.\u00a0 Even among friends, we don&#8217;t have to agree.\u00a0 But we share a variety of viewpoints or perspectives on items in our online trade journal anyway. Why?\u00a0 Because I or others still learn from them, <em>even if we do see it differently!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not talking about &#8216;diversity&#8217; here in some &#8216;politically correct&#8217; sense.\u00a0 I&#8217;m talking about the practical advantages of diversity and its benefits.\u00a0 We are diverse in publishing, in part because it is good for learning.\u00a0 It is good to challenge each other with ideas and thinking that get us to dig deeper for solutions.<\/p>\n<p>I started in this Manufactured Home Industry back in 1981, working for a company that had no training program.\u00a0 Well, I take that back.\u00a0 Here were the bullet points of their training program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here are the keys to the homes.<\/li>\n<li>Here is the credit application and Form 100 (or 500).<\/li>\n<li>Here is our price sheet.<\/li>\n<li>Here is a pen.<\/li>\n<li><em>Go get &#8217;em, Tiger!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a manufactured housing retailer or MH Community operator sells or leases homes in a boom town with little competition, you could be successful even with that type of &#8216;training&#8217; system.\u00a0 That said, the company I started with years ago is now long gone.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t depend on order takers getting the job done in our Industry.\u00a0 Best Buy, Holiday Inn and others outside of our Industry make new people train for weeks before they see their first customer.\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t it make sense to train our sales staff and other professionals, too?<\/p>\n<p>Going back to my own induction into manufactured home sales, I tried to learn from anyone I could.\u00a0 Sometimes that learning was from others, in or outside of our Industry<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some of my education was from reading articles in the now defunct <strong><em>Merchandiser Magazine<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Automation in Housing\/Manufactured Home Dealer<\/em><\/strong> magazine.\u00a0 Doing an online ezine like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/\"><strong><em>MHMarketingSalesManagement.com <\/em><\/strong><\/a>is, in part, our way of &#8216;giving back&#8217; to an Industry that I love \u2013 and love even while admitting that our Industry has its flaws and shortcoming.\u00a0 We have a great product and a great message.\u00a0 But even the best product has to be <em>sold.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have some friends who are successful in professions outside of ours.\u00a0 At times, we will get together, and I will take them to a nicely installed HUD Code home in an attractive setting.\u00a0 The results are often similar to this&#8230;<em>\u201dI didn&#8217;t know that manufactured housing can be so nice!\u201d <\/em> Or <em>\u201cI didn&#8217;t realize the quality of today&#8217;s manufactured homes!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;ll bet if you have been in the business for more than a few months, you&#8217;ve heard statements like those, too. <\/strong>They are reminders that we do a less than stellar job of marketing our product.\u00a0 They are reminders that we need to engage the public in order to convince them of the value of what we sell.<\/p>\n<p>I learned firsthand that is also a good practice to invite your local public officials and do the same thing \u2013 show them a nice home, that is furnished, decorated or \u201cstaged\u201d and properly installed.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll often get the same type of response, <em>\u201cI didn&#8217;t know how nice a manufactured home could be.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once the public official indicates they are impressed, I may ask them if they would mind having their photo taken with me or another team member.\u00a0 They are told up front that the photo will be shared publicly.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had once-negative public officials who held up some piece of company literature and posed that way for their picture!\u00a0 They were <em>that impressed<\/em> with the homes.\u00a0 Perhaps they also listened as I droned on to them about how factory building is the future, and the day will come when those who &#8216;get it&#8217; will be seen as the visionaries when factory building dominates our great country.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you like reading this blog, or one of our other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/bobstovall\/\">blogs<\/a>, or some of our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/\">featured writers<\/a>.\u00a0 Good.\u00a0 But if you don&#8217;t like something, read it anyway!\u00a0 Not for my sake, or the author&#8217;s, <strong><em>but for your sake. <\/em><\/strong> Why?\u00a0 Because the keen mind will pick up on what makes sense.\u00a0 The keen mind will be willing to consider ideas that are new, different and sound like they have potential.<\/p>\n<p>The sharp person then tests and analyzes, and puts to work various items.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll bet you&#8217;ve walked into a store or restaurant before, and picked up on what is working \u2013 and not working \u2013 at the place of business.\u00a0 This is partially the advantage of having a fresh perspective \u2013 what I call \u201cnew eyes\u201d \u2013 and also a reason why some businesses hire a consultant.\u00a0 They know they want someone else to give them a checkup, just the same as you would go to an MD, insurance, investment or attorney for a checkup.<\/p>\n<p>If you pick up on some new idea that makes sense \u2013 either here or anywhere else &#8211; don&#8217;t test that idea just one time.<\/p>\n<p>The law of averages rarely gives 100% results on anything!\u00a0 If you can guess right on 55% of all sporting events, you could make money with that, even though it fails 45% of the time.\u00a0 In marketing and selling, you may have what looks like a modest result; but repeated often enough, the cumulative impact may be amazingly good to your bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>Sports enthusiasts practice to improve.
