{"id":1373,"date":"2011-02-12T07:34:34","date_gmt":"2011-02-12T13:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/tonykovach\/?p=1373"},"modified":"2011-02-12T07:34:34","modified_gmt":"2011-02-12T13:34:34","slug":"being-pigeonholed-the-wall-street-journal-and-manufactured-housing-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/being-pigeonholed-the-wall-street-journal-and-manufactured-housing-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Being Pigeonholed, the Wall Street Journal and Manufactured Housing News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This may sound for a few moments to be about me, but really the example that follows is more about your neighbor down the street, across town or across the country.\u00a0 So please hang with me, as this is about our Industry and your role and future in this business.<\/p><div id=\"manuf-2937131136\" class=\"manuf-content manuf-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3870480136270376\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3870480136270376\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you read some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/latonykovach\">LinkedIn<\/a> recommendations on my profile, you might gain a different perspective than you would from the woman whom I won&#8217;t name, but will use as an example in this true story.<\/p>\n<p>The woman I am thinking about was professionally gifted.\u00a0 She worked with me some years back.\u00a0 She was good at her job. She seemed to truly like it. She wanted more pay and some other things, but who doesn&#8217;t?\u00a0 Now the professional challenge was that this woman, who reported to me at the time, hated my guts. She was sweet as pie with others; but with me, it was daggers and venom.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>She told me early on, that I reminded her of an ex-husband who was abusive.\u00a0 As I listened to her express the horrors of her abusive former mate, it was easy to feel and see her genuine pain.\u00a0 The problem, for me at least, was <em>that I wasn&#8217;t this other guy<\/em>. I had no interest in anything more than a good working relationship with this woman on behalf of the firm we worked for then. But every time she was around me, she wanted to take out on me this hatred and fear she had for this other fellow, whom I never knew or met.<\/p>\n<p>Now, translate this sort of scenario and think about manufactured housing.<\/p>\n<p>How many people do you know or have met who don&#8217;t have a clue as to what our homes are like and the good that our Industry can do?\u00a0 How many people have pigeonholed manufactured homes the same way that woman from years ago pigeonholed me?<\/p>\n<p>How many people have wrongfully pigeonholed you or someone you know?<\/p>\n<p>Some people pick up <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> or the <em>New York Times<\/em>, their local newspaper or favorite news outlet daily.\u00a0 They think nothing of it, it is a habit. It may even be a good one if, for example, they are learning something of value from the news and are applying it.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of very bright people \u2013 like you \u2013 are here reading MHMSM.com twice weekly, or even daily to learn what is going on in our manufactured housing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/\">Daily Business News and Market Report<\/a>.\u00a0 Others log on to our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/corp-press-releases\">association news<\/a>, or visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/calendar-of-events\">events<\/a> section, or are following the blogs by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/bobstovall\/\">Bob Stovall<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/timconnor\/\">Tim Connor<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/industryvoices\/\">Industry Voices<\/a>, etc.\u00a0 Some are in the modular or prefab business, and our<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/\">Daily Business News<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/component\/alpharegistration\/?task=register\">News at Noon<strong> <\/strong>Podcasts<\/a> carry more of that news, or HUD Code manufactured housing news, than anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>While a record of over 37,000 logged on in January 2011, others have not yet learned about us, or have pigeonholed MHMSM.com.\u00a0 Maybe they came once, saw a name of a writer they didn&#8217;t care for, and that was it.\u00a0 Hello?\u00a0 They then tuned out the most robust news, tips and views source available today in the factory built housing media.\u00a0 This is what our writer Tim Connor calls &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/timconnor\/is-your-filter-clean\">filters<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;blind spots.&#8221; We all have filters, to include \u2013 or exclude \u2013 potentially useful Information.\u00a0 If we don&#8217;t clean our filters, then we can filter out something useful.<\/p>\n<p>Type cast.\u00a0 Pigeonholed.\u00a0 People do this all the time; we all do it, but should we?\u00a0 We want people to want our home products and they should.\u00a0 We all want a fair hearing for ourselves and for our homes!\u00a0 Yet I&#8217;ve met employees of firms in our industry who can be as negative about our home product as that woman mentioned above was negative about me.<\/p>\n<p>We have to learn to get past the filters, our own or that of others, in order for us to reach the 85% of the home buying market who tune us out!<\/p>\n<p>We have to be willing to deal with others effectively.\u00a0 We have good reasons to treat others the way we want to be treated.\u00a0 Every month, our featured writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/featured-articles\/1386-two-pots-and-a-puzzle\">Greg McClanahan<\/a> writes an often touching and inspired article on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/featured-articles\/november-2009\/86-leaders-are-learners\">soft skills<\/a>.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because we all need them.\u00a0 I know I do!\u00a0 If our employees or co-workers have those soft skills, our Industry would be light years ahead of where we are today.\u00a0 Every featured author is on our pages for a good reason.\u00a0 They offer insights and value.<\/p>\n<p>We have all been on both sides of this equation: we have been misjudged or misunderstood by others.\u00a0 We have also been guilty of misunderstanding or misjudging others.\u00a0 This means we have the perfect reason to understand why people misunderstand our homes, or our profession!\u00a0 We have all been there, done that and have a t-shirt.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the solution is so common sense, but it will strike some as self-serving.\u00a0 We need to have our Industry members reading and listening to good Industry input DAILY.\u00a0 State or national meetings can be informative; I go to them, like the upcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/all-other-events\/1023-mhi-winter-meeting-a-legislative-conference\">MHI Congress<\/a>. Events and shows, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/the-great-southwest-home-show\">2011 Great Southwest Home Show<\/a> are ever so important in order to know what is available, to network, to see the latest products and services, to have some fun with Industry peers. Speaking of that, check out their latest video, which we will post for you here below for your convenience.\u00a0 My associates and I hope to see you there.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"574\" height=\"461\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jacMLWG1kTA?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But the point is this.\u00a0 We all need a daily dose of Industry news, tips and views you can use. We all need those <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/featured-articles\/november-2009\/86-leaders-are-learners\"><em>soft skills<\/em><\/a>, and those <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/timconnor\/is-your-filter-clean\/\"><em>filter checks<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 If you are an owner or supervisor, do you want some person ignorant of or biased against our homes to be influencing your staff?\u00a0 Or do you want a pro-Industry resource like MHMSM.com to do better equip your staff for dealing with the public at large?<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t want to be pigeonholed.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want the Industry to be type cast as second class housing.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want your staff or associates to be thinking in some negative fashion about our Industry, either.<\/p>\n<p>Some people rail when I mention Warren Buffett in some favorable light, and no, I am not on his payroll in any sense. (Warren, if you are reading, you could take out that famous napkin of yours&#8230; and change that fact).\u00a0 But I have and will continue to say, Buffett and his billions are one of the best reasons you can think of for why manufactured housing is the future and not the past!<\/p>\n<p>Buffett and company are financially committed; so, too, are some big REITs (Real Estate Investment Trust), or private equity funds, and people just like you, to the future of factory built housing in America.\u00a0 We need to see the facts, which is why the Manufactured Housing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/\"><strong><em>Daily Business News<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>and<strong><em> Market Report<\/em><\/strong><\/a> should be your daily stop, and it should be for your associates, too.\u00a0 Our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/industry-news\/industry-in-focus\"><strong><em>Industry In Focus Reports<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>are timeless articles that give you and your associates the tools to answer many of those negative questions or comments the media or others use to stereotype our Industry.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t pigeonhole others, and don&#8217;t let others pigeonhole you or our Industry. We need food daily.\u00a0 We need air all the time.\u00a0 We need to exercise our minds the same as we do our bodies.\u00a0 Do it here at <strong><em>Manufactured Home Marketing Sales Management<\/em><\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/home\">MHMSM.com<\/a>), get others to, as well.\u00a0 37,000 readers is great; thanks for making us twice the size of the next closest factory built housing media outlet.\u00a0 But that number 37,000 could double overnight if you and your associates got one more person to log on, to get and stay informed and motivated.<\/p>\n<p>A lady wrote in and said, when more people read us, we all win.\u00a0 An industry exec wrote to say, thanks for advancing the cause of professionalism in our industry.
