Accountability, Politics, Media and Manufactured Housing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s start with something I will close on.\u00a0 As a seasoned association executive told the <strong><em>Masthead,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0they \u2018<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>are not in the business of defending bad judgments or bad actors<\/strong><\/span>\u2018 who cause the troubling headlines that impact manufactured housing.\u00a0 Please, <em>hold that wise thought, <\/em>as you read what follows&#8230;<\/p><div id=\"manuf-2762729159\" class=\"manuf-content manuf-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3870480136270376\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3870480136270376\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Hebrew Scriptures, commonly known by Christians as the <em>Old Testament<\/em>, tell us numerous historic, thought provoking and inspirational accounts from people\u2019s whose names billions have come to know well.<\/p>\n<p>There is David and Goliath, a reminder that the smaller and weaker can overcome the strong. There is Moses, who Scripture says was initially not a great speaker.\u00a0 Yet, he rallied his people, and with God&#8217;s help, he led them to freedom. Image credit, Real Life Hereos.<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>our unique way.\u00a0 One day, David spotted the lovely Bathsheba (&#8220;Bat Sheva,&#8221; in Hebrew), and \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>took her<\/strong><\/span>\u201d unlawfully. \u00a0Once he realized that the crime he committed was going to be exposed, he plotted to have her husband Uriah killed.\u00a0 Once that murderous deed was done, David took Bathsheba as his wife, one of the many wives the king enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p>This very human David is held up for Christians and Jews alike as a model, <em>why?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>David sinned, his evil plot was quietly exposed. For other MHProNews sponsors, see the right hand column. <\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Per <strong><em>ResearchGate<\/em>,<\/strong> between 1985 and 2007, some \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>43.2% (536 of 1240) of US tornado fatalities occurred in mobile homes<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d We industry professionals must note, that they \u2013 as is sadly common in the media \u2013 make no distinction between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomelivingnews.com\/40th-birthday-of-manufactured-housing-end-of-mobile-home-era\/\">HUD Code manufactured homes, and pre-HUD Code mobile homes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, based upon those numbers &#8211; on average, during a roughly 22 year period covered by their study &#8211; 24.36 souls died each year who lived in a mobile or manufactured home.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><em>BBC<\/em><\/strong> reported in September of 2013, that some 20,000,000 Americans lived in mobile or manufactured homes.\u00a0 That number might be low, so we found it useful for the following calculation.<\/p>\n<p>Based upon the BBC\u2019s numbers that some 20 million Americans are living in an MH, the odds are 833,333 to 1 in an MH resident\u2019s favor that they won\u2019t die in a mobile or manufactured home during a tornado.<\/p>\n<p>To rephrase, that means that during those years, those <strong>living in a mobile and manufactured home are some 17.46 times safer (less likely) to die in their home during a tornado<\/strong>, then they are likely to die in their vehicle due to a fatal auto accident.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, those numbers are not precise, but they are close enough to have real meaning for anyone seeking the truth.<\/p>\n<p>The truth properly told ought to be an essential part of how we define ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>No one I know is giving up their car due to the most recent auto fatality reported.\u00a0 Deaths in cars are accepted, a sad reality of contemporary life. \u00a0The risk is accepted in exchange for the value of mobility.<\/p>\n<p>When NPR\u2019s report on auto deaths hit the media, it wasn\u2019t the sensation that their recent reports on mobile home parks and MH Living were. For other MHProNews sponsors, see the right hand column. <\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of course, there is more to the safety of manufactured homes than the facts above, and we\u2019ll dig into that more with another report planned soon.<\/p>\n<p>But the initial bottom-line takeaway for the moment is this. <strong><em>The odds are wildly in the favor of those living in a mobile or manufactured home that they won\u2019t die in a severe windstorm.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please note that our various reports and videos on the subject of windstorms \u2013 including tornadoes and hurricanes &#8211; on <strong><em>MHLivingNews<\/em><\/strong> now score at or near the top of Google searches.<\/p>\n<p>Note too that one of those \u2018hits\u2019 on the search was a scorching rebuke of an inaccurate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nssl.noaa.gov\/users\/brooks\/public_html\/essays\/mobilehome.html\">claim made by MHI back in 1991<\/a>\u00a0(see graphic, below).\u00a0 That should give all in MH today reason for pause. \u00a0Industry pros ought to think beyond today, looking to the present and future impact of their choices. Good-or-bad news hangs around for years and years online. You never know when it will pop-up, as the example linked above vividly demonstrates.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why we believe that MHI \u2013 or any association or business \u2013 ought to carefully frame their responses and their own postings.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also why no group can afford to take a totally insulated view. A narrowly decided action can hurt those who made a decision, and in a relatively small industry such as manufactured homes, many others besides.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13063\" NPR\u2019s arguably ignorant, sloppy or biased (take your pick\u2026) reporting of mobile\/manufactured home communities.<\/p>\n<p>Among the comments sent for publication is one from the president of a large and respected operation in our industry.\u00a0 To sum that up, he says on-the-record that he welcomes accountability for his company.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13066\" Consider that as modest, polite call for those in Arlington to be more responsive, because as a member and as a pro-industry trade publisher, <em>they ought to be ready, willing and able to express and defend their positions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After all, we as pro-Industry trade media are looking to advance the industry, which is also the ideal that an association should be striving for too.<\/p>\n<p>That same principle holds true for us, <strong>we too are accountable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among those we quoted in the Duty to Serve\/GSE report linked above is Titus Dare.\u00a0 Titus holds a very different view from my own in politics, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/blogs\/industryvoices\/titus-dares-view-on-dr-ben-carson-for-hud-secretary\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dare&#8217;s statement<\/strong><\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/mhpronews.com\/blogs\/tonykovach\/open-letter-to-dr-ben-carson-how-you-could-lead-hud-to-historic-achievements-by-ending-a-form-of-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Ben Carson compared to the <em>Masthead&#8217;s<\/em> (mine)<\/a> underscore.<\/p>\n<p>One of Titus\u2019 linked articles chides\/admonishes me, and at other times applauds some of my published perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>The point? \u00a0We &#8211; nor anyone else in our industry &#8211; should not be afraid of an honest critique. Someone or some group might try to step up and fill that gap. But as the historic note in the link above suggests, trade publishing isn\u2019t a task to be lightly undertaken.
