Non-Profits, the Media, Resident Relations and Manufactured Housing Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every professional knows this to be true.\u00a0 Success is always predicated on a system that routinely produces a reliable result; a desired outcome.<\/p><div id=\"manuf-1407875111\" class=\"manuf-content manuf-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3870480136270376\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3870480136270376\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Factories have systems.\u00a0 Lenders and insurance companies, they have systems.\u00a0 Attorneys \u2013 boy do they have systems!\u00a0 Perhaps one of the least systematic areas in our industry would be marketing and sales, we won\u2019t talk about those today <em>\u2013 but good operations have systems there too.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, against that backdrop \u2013 we will look at non-profits, the media and resident relations. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, almost all in media are in business. \u00a0An editor knows that drama sells papers, brings more viewers or causes more click-throughs. While not everyone in media has an <strong>\u2018if it bleeds, it leads\u2019<\/strong> mentality, it is a common thread.\u00a0 Think about the last terrorist attack, the last \u2013 or next \u2013 senseless murder, and you know that drama moves the audience, and thus attracts those in media to cover it.<\/p>\n<p>There are mainstream news stories about apartment closures, or older conventional housing that gets bulldozed for redevelopement.\u00a0 These are NOT just manufactured home community news stories.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12433\" src=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ManufacturedHousingIndustryStatisticsBloomberg-postedmastheadblogManufacturedHomeMHProNews-.png\" alt=\"manufacturedhousingindustrystatisticsbloomberg-postedmastheadblogmanufacturedhomemhpronews\" width=\"584\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ManufacturedHousingIndustryStatisticsBloomberg-postedmastheadblogManufacturedHomeMHProNews-.png 633w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ManufacturedHousingIndustryStatisticsBloomberg-postedmastheadblogManufacturedHomeMHProNews--150x123.png 150w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ManufacturedHousingIndustryStatisticsBloomberg-postedmastheadblogManufacturedHomeMHProNews--523x430.png 523w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While we are years into the MH recovery, we as an industry are still thin compared to our history or potential.\u00a0 The <strong><em>Bloomberg <\/em><\/strong>charts exemplify the point. They are pro-affordable housing, and they have studied MH enough to believe in the quality of our product.<\/p>\n<p>But when MH pros and non-profits disagree, both sides need to come together and talk issues through.\u00a0 Now, I know some will say \u2013 perhaps on both sides \u2013 <strong>\u2018<em><span style=\"color: #993300;\">we\u2019ve tried that, it didn\u2019t work<\/span>.\u2019 \u00a0<\/em><\/strong>That\u2019s an excuse by anyone who uses it, because some things are worth many, many good efforts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12431\" src=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/CFEDCenterforEnterpriseDevelopmentLogo-postedMastheadBlogMHProNews.png\" alt=\"cfedcenterforenterprisedevelopmentlogo-postedmastheadblogmhpronews\" width=\"417\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/CFEDCenterforEnterpriseDevelopmentLogo-postedMastheadBlogMHProNews.png 521w, https:\/\/www.manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/CFEDCenterforEnterpriseDevelopmentLogo-postedMastheadBlogMHProNews-150x84.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The non-profits are \u2013 potentially \u2013 among our strongest MH allies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I first reached out to CFED a few years ago, long before they took the heavy-hand in efforts akin to the <a href=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomelivingnews.com\/media-should-re-visit-dodd-frank-reporting-in-light-of-congressional-testimony\/\">Seattle Times<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomelivingnews.com\/what-pbs-newshour-missed-about-manufactured-home-living\/\">PBS<\/a> news stories.<\/p>\n<p>Being blunt, <em>the reason that HR 650\/S 682 isn\u2019t already law is largely because of the non-profits<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That means, <em>the for-profits failed to convince them<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, they chose to battle them and in a sense, that was inevitable. Because CFED and their allies do oppose the kind of chattel lending that two of our industry&#8217;s largest personal property lenders offer.<\/p>\n<p>But that is an<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomelivingnews.com\/media-should-re-visit-dodd-frank-reporting-in-light-of-congressional-testimony\/\">educational issue<\/a>.<\/em> We did those <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhmarketingsalesmanagement.com\/home\/featured-articles\/may-2016\/11457-manufactured-home-lending-regulations-rentals-and-mh-communities-don-glisson-jr-video\">video interviews with Triad Financial Services\u2019 Don Glisson Jr<\/a> in part to help non-profits and<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9356\" style=\"width: 105px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9356\" src=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/don-glisson-jr-triad-financial-service-manufactured-housing-loans-posted-masthead-blog-mhpronews-.jpg\" alt=\"don-glisson-jr-triad-financial-service-manufactured-housing-loans-posted-masthead-blog-mhpronews-\" width=\"105\" height=\"105\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Triad Financial Services Chairman, Don Glisson, Jr.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>others see the light on the truth of MH Lending. \u00a0Personal property lending is simple business math, and when done properly, it works for lenders, sellers and consumers alike.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10492\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10492\" style=\"width: 55px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10492\" src=\"http:\/\/manufacturedhomepronews.com\/masthead\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/jan-hollingsworth-for-mhlivingnews-com-55.jpg\" alt=\"jan-hollingsworth-for-mhlivingnews-com-55\" width=\"55\" height=\"55\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10492\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jan Hollingsworth, award winning journalist.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We were also blessed by those <a href=\"manufacturedhomelivingnews.com\/renters-nation-the-dark-side-of-dodd-frank-and-its-impact-on-affordable-housing\/\">columns by Jan Hollingsworth on manufactured home chattel lending<\/a>.\u00a0She laid out the case on Dodd-Frank, CFPB and all of those harmful consequences that followed.<\/p>\n<p>The non-profits are made up of people quite like anyone else in life.\u00a0 They have an agenda, it is often good, so it isn\u2019t always bad, wrong or in conflict with MH Pros.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d all agree they are correct in supporting manufactured housing as a good option that can build value and save money for millions of consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Where we disagree with CFED or others \u2013 that\u2019s obviously where each side needs to enter into a serious discussion.<\/p>\n<p>One of those areas are regular hot topics in manufactured housing industry circles, because it is a hot sector. They had pro-resident, \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">good neighbor<\/span><\/strong>\u201d policies. So the resident had to track down my number, and that caller was motivated.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We spoke for nearly 40 minutes.\u00a0 I listened, asked some questions and listened some more.<\/p>\n<p>Near the end, I explained that I\u2019ve been a resident too, and that I\u2019ve played a role in the management of many communities \u2013 in supervisory roles and as consultant \u2013 for well over a decade. I then pointed to Paul Bradley\u2019s column and said, <em>we need to be thinking in terms of mutual victories.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That means resident group organizers need to understand management, and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>ELS may not realize it, but gratis I helped them head-off a problem at one of their properties over a year ago.\u00a0 A different resident group contacted me about a location of theirs, with the kinds of concerns you might expect. After hearing their thoughts, I explained why organizing group protests and causing\u00a0<em>a storm of negative media coverage results in harming the home values of everyone in the communities where they protest.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>That specific group had not thought about that aspect of the matter before<\/strong>. \u00a0<em>But frankly, ELS could not have said that to them<\/em>, and been credible.\u00a0 As an independent &#8211; yes pro-MH Industry and pro-consumer publisher &#8211;<strong>\u00a0<em>I could.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are pro-free enterprise. \u00a0Socialism always fails in the end.
